Berkley Fire Department Gets New Tanker, Refurbished Fire Engine

BERKLEY - The visible returns of a $400,000 debt exclusion approved by Town Meeting voters in 2015 are at the town's fire/rescue station, ready to protect people and property in Berkley and Bristol County. Of that amount, $300,000 went to the purchase of a 4,000-gallon capacity tanker built in 2015.
This Freightliner model is needed to bring the water to the fire scene.“The city of Taunton has hydrants. We don’t have any hydrants,” said Berkley Fire Chief Scott Fournier. The second fire truck is a late 1980-model refurbished fire engine. Its purchase price came in at $100,000.It would have cost another $300,000 to $400,000 to buy a new engine truck.“We didn’t think that was the best bang for the buck,” Fournier said.

Tulsa International Airport To Auction Its Largest Fire Truck

The Tulsa airport has put its main fire truck up for auction. And after looking at ways to save money, the airport decided it wouldn't buy a replacement. It's the last day in service for the fire truck at the airport. It's being sold off, and it won't be replaced.

The truck can hold 3,000 gallons of water.

It's the largest one at the airport fire station and the only one equipped with a snozzle - a tool that firefighters push into burning aircraft to shoot water inside.

But the government considers it to be at the end of its useful life, so it's being sold.

The airport's deputy director says even without it, the airport has enough firefighting capability.

“It's totally determined based on the size of the airplane that operates here at least five times a day and the length of that airplane,” TIA spokesperson Alexis Higgins said.

The airport, and ultimately taxpayers and passengers, pay the cost of fire protection on the airport grounds, so any savings in equipment and people eventually makes the airport more competitive.

New Fire Apparatus Rolled Out in Steubenville (OH)

The city of Steubenville has a new fire engine. They rolled it out this afternoon for the very first time on Tuesday. It's big, it's mean, it's red and best of all, it's brand new. Engine 6713 is hitting the streets and helping firefighters protect the hill
"We're excited to have it in service. It's taken about 8 to 9 months from start to finish to get it built. Anytime you get a vehicle like this, it's a rather large expense. It doesn't come around too often because most of our vehicles, they're in service for 25 years. The truck this one's replacing is 29 years old and has been in service at this station from day one," said Carlo Capaldi, Steubenville fire chief.

The new engine will stay at the Pleasant Heights fire station, and thanks to a FEMA grant this $375,000 machine will only cost the city $17,000.

Capaldi says the grant, the truck and other investments made by FEMA in Steubenville are encouraging.

The engine has already been on a call and the firefighters in Pleasant Heights say that everything is working great.
