Application Period Now Open for 2016 Globe PPE Giveaway

Globe, DuPont Protection Technologies (DuPont), and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) have teamed up for the fifth year to provide new gear to volunteer fire departments in need. The application period for the 2016 Globe Gear Giveaway is now open, and eligible departments can apply for four sets of CLASSIX® turnout gear for their members. Thirteen department awards will be made, for a total of 52 sets of gear. Applications are due by June 1, 2016.

“The Globe Gear Giveaway is helping fill a critical need for fire departments across the U.S. and Canada. As demonstrated by the amount of applications we receive each year, volunteer departments are constantly looking for ways to keep their firefighters safe while operating on tight budgets,” says NVFC Chairman Kevin D. Quinn. “On behalf of the NVFC and volunteer fire departments nationwide, I am truly grateful to Globe and DuPont for helping more and more departments provide their personnel with compliant turnout gear.”

The Globe Gear Giveaway launched in 2012 to celebrate Globe’s 125th anniversary. Globe wanted to give back to the fire service and enhance the safety and readiness of first responders. To date, the program has provided 299 sets of new turnout gear to 56 departments in need to help them improve the safety and protection of their firefighters. The first 500 applicants also receive a one-year department membership to the NVFC, compliments of Globe.

To be eligible to apply for four sets of Globe PPE, departments must meet the following requirements:

  • Be all-volunteer or mostly-volunteer (over 50 percent).
  • Serve a population of 25,000 or less.
  • Be located in the U.S. or Canada and legally organized under state/province law.
  • Demonstrate a need for the gear.
  • Department or person applying must be a member of the NVFC. To help struggling departments meet the membership criteria, Globe will provide a complimentary NVFC Membership to the first 500 applicants.

“Globe is honored to give back to some of the many volunteer fire departments with limited resources by providing the most advanced turnout gear,” said Rob Freese, Senior VP of Marketing at Globe Manufacturing Company. “We’re grateful for the thousands of volunteer firefighters who protect our communities every day. They deserve the best personal protection to ensure their own safety.”

“DuPont is proud to be working together with Globe to support the NVFC again this year through this much needed gear donation program,” says Christine Christmas, North American Marketing Manager, DuPont Protection Technologies. “With our strong commitment to help protect our protectors we want to ensure that they have the right gear to focus on their job and their communities. Working with Globe we can make the best for the best—100 percent of Globe’s turnout gear is made with DuPont™ Nomex® and Kevlar® fibers providing proven protection and top performance.”

TargetSolutions Presents Awards, Gives Thanks at Networking and Training Workshop

TargetSolutions, a leading provider of online training management applications for public safety agencies, held its annual Networking & Training Workshop last week in San Diego, California.

Account members packed the house atop the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter to mingle with TargetSolutions’ employees and network with peers using the system. Two fire agencies and one long-time platform manager were honored with prestigious honors by TargetSolutions.

Stuart Sprung of the Oceanside (CA) Fire Department was given the Helping Hand Award, presented each year to someone who goes above and beyond to help TargetSolutions improve its online fire department training system. Two other agencies, West Metro (CO) Fire Protection District and Tualatin Valley (OR) Fire & Rescue, were recognized with the Vanguard and Technology Achievement Awards, respectively.

Attendees asked questions, learned tips and tricks, and offered platform suggestions.

“This is really all about you, the customers,” said TargetSolutions’ Regional Sales Manager Kegan Konrady. “We really want you to know we wouldn’t be here without you.”

Here is a breakdown of the awards presented by TargetSolutions:

The Vanguard Award

West Metro Fire Protection District is a cutting-edge department constantly looking to maximize its training resources. After economic reasons led to a re-organization, the District was forced to find more efficient, cost-effective ways for managing training and compliance.

“It was out of necessity, really,” said Division Chief Dan Pfannenstiel. “We lost some people in training and we needed a new delivery model. That’s why we decided to blaze the trail with TargetSolutions.”

The District signed on with TargetSolutions in May of 2012 and has worked hard to exploit the platform’s capabilities and communicate the benefits to other agencies in the area, making West Metro a clear choice for the Vanguard Award.

“West Metro is one of the most respected agencies in the Denver area and all of Colorado,” said TargetSolutions’ Regional Sales Director Phil Coons. “It’s a progressive agency that is looking to be at the forefront of innovation and that explains why they are experiencing such significant success utilizing the platform.”

The Technology Achievement Award

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue was not able to attend the event in San Diego, but was given the Technology Achievement Award. The Oregon-based department has shown remarkable ingenuity in its implementation of the system, said Coons.

Having signed on less than two year ago, the department has quickly mastered the platform’s full capabilities and is continuously pushing the envelope to achieve departmental efficiencies.

“Tualatin fully grasps the concept of customization with the platform and is finding ways to make TargetSolutions work for the specific needs of the department,” said Coons.

The Helping Hand Award

Sprung, who serves as Oceanside’s Fire Training Specialist, was a slam dunk for the Helping Hand Award because he consistently works with TargetSolutions staff members to improve the platform’s capabilities. Sprung takes the time to provide feedback, troubleshoot issues, and work with his neighbors who are looking to make the most of TargetSolutions.

“This is a really nice gesture by TargetSolutions, but it’s really recognizing the work of all of us collectively who are trying to find training improvements,” said Sprung, who works closely with members of t

INCREDIBLE SURVIVAL: South Glengarry firefighter tells wife 'Alex was watching'

CORNWALL, Ontario - How South Glengarry firefighter Randy Robertson survived a harrowing rollover accident on Highway 401 Saturday is anyone's guess - except his. "He told me our nephew Alexander was watching over him," said Robertson's wife Debbie Julien on Sunday, barely 24 hours after Robertson was nearly killed while responding in a fire truck to another accident on the busy provincial thoroughfare.

The tanker truck Robertson was driving rolled multiple times on a snowy Saturday morning. He was left partially hanging from the vehicle which appears nearly destroyed in images shared with this newspaper.

His injuries read like a laundry list of life-threatening ailments: a collapsed lung, broken shoulder, broken collar bone, broken vertebrae, internal bleeding and a deep gash on his head. A chest tube has also been inserted.

Doctors, who have informed Julien that her husband is expected to recover, are expected to make a decision on surgery concerning his badly injured back.
