Washington Township seeking loan for fire equipment

The Washington Township Advisory Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 at the trustee's office, 231 E. Main St. in the fire station, to consider establishing a fire equipment loan.

Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department Chief “Dak” Kelp said the loan is to allow for the purchase of a new rescue truck, bigger than the current rescue and smaller than an engine, with the capabilities of both. The estimated cost of it is $390,000.

Kelp said the truck this one would replace — Rescue 16 — was bought new around 2012. It’s nearing the end of its service life because of being used on nearly every fire run and having to carry more equipment than what it was really designed to carry, he said.

If approved, this would be the second new truck to be added to the BCVFD’s fleet this year.

App That Warns of Fire Trucks Tested in Grand Rapids (MI)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - Developers have launched the test phase of an app that will sound an alert when Grand Rapids Fire Department crews are near and responding to a call. With loud music playing and vehicle soundproofing, it can be difficult to hear anything going on outside your car, let alone an emergency vehicles' sirens down the road.

The department turned to the HAAS Alert app. If users download the app, it will tell them through their smartphone or in-car stereo system when an emergency vehicle with sirens activated is nearby, even if the user is playing music or taking a call.
