Wheat Field Fire Destroys Town Creek (AL) Truck 502

Donna Campbell, Chief/EMT of the Town Creek Fire Department, posted to Facebook that a wheat field fire Thursday destroyed the department’s Truck 502.

“I was out of the truck when the fire shifted and got back in to try to get the truck moved,” she writes. “The flames were coming up over the front, and I jumped out. Another firefighter was there from another department with me, and he tried spraying water on it.

“This is what our truck 502 looks like now. And this is what’s left of my helmet. None of my firefighters or any of the firefighters from the other two departments were injured. Thank you to Hatton and Red Bank for assistance. Thank you to Madison and Zack with Greg’s ambulance for coming and checking on us. Thank you to Amanda who was dispatching. My helmet was in the truck.”

Extinguishing Electric Vehicle Battery Fires

The call is coming when you will face an electric vehicle (EV) battery fire. Maybe you already have and experienced dousing an EV in more than 8,000 gallons of water and being on scene for four hours or more. There is a better way. Developed over six years in partnership with leading automotive companies the Rosenbauer battery extinguishing system technology (BEST) does the job with a fraction of the water and within an hour or less. When positioned adjacent to the battery pack on the vehicle, the piercing unit punctures the battery pack and halts thermal runaway by injecting cooling water around the battery cells at just eight gallons per minute and keeping the firefighter a safe 25ft away. What was a resource-intensive call for service is now simple, safe, and efficient.

New $7M Goshen (IN) Fire Station Coming to Fruition

The Goshen Redevelopment Commission Tuesday approved a bond issuance to construct a new fire station on the city’s south side.

“BKV Group provided a presentation of the final New South Fire Station study that’s recently been completed,” the agenda reads. “As part of that exercise with their firm, we evaluated the needs of a new fourth station for Goshen near the airport on CR 40. They provided a preliminary plan with construction estimates totaling approximately $7 million.

“The Redevelopment Commission has previously approved contributing $4.2 million toward this project’s construction. In lieu of using existing TIF dollars and seeking the remainder of the funds from other City budgets, we requested that Baker Tilly evaluate the bonding capacity within the Southeast TIF … The scenario demonstrates that we have adequate capacity to issue a bond to fund $7 million in construction costs for the new station while having the ability to fully repay the bond with TIF revenues prior to the TIF expiration dates.

“We are requesting approval from the Commission to move forward with a bond issue for the New South Fire Station. We will not begin the bond process until the project is fully designed and more precise cost estimates become available. This step ensures that we’re moving forward with a project that has a funding mechanism identified prior to completing design.”

Commission members hired BKV Group to conduct the study during the February 2021 meeting to find a new location with better response times for station 3. The study showed that it would be best to keep the station at its current location and build a fourth facility on CR 40.

New Fire HQ on the Way for Milton (MA)

The Milton Fire Department recently broke ground for its new Fire Department Headquarters.

“Thank you to the Milton Fire Station Building Committee for your time and talent, bringing this project to fruition,” a Facebook post from State Senator Walter F. Timilty reads.

“As Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, I have heard from firefighters and chiefs, alike, from across the Commonwealth who report that their old fire houses were built for horse-drawn wagons a century or more ago. These aging stations that are still in active service do not fit into the 21st century picture of public safety.

“Moreover, these stations are a danger to the health and wellness of our firefighters. The new stations that will be built in Milton will dramatically improve working conditions for the fire department.

“This is a momentous day for #MiltonMA.”
