Pasco County (FL) Fire Rescue Puts New Mobile Decon, Mobile Rehab Units in Service

By Alan M. Petrillo

Pasco County Fire Rescue has put in service two new specialized vehicles—a Mobile Decon Unit to handle decontamination of turnout gear and other personal protective equipment (PPE) at fire scenes, and a Mobile Rehab Unit to make sure personnel are rehabbed properly and have any medical needs attended to.

Scott Cassin, Pasco County Fire Rescue chief, says the Mobile Decon Unit solves the issue of having two sets of turnout gear for each of the department’s 700 firefighters. “About two years ago, our senior staff suggested fitting out a truck with extra turnout gear to respond to fires with sets of multiple sizes of turnouts and other PPE,” Cassin says. “The contaminated gear then was sent to third-party gear-decon cleaners.”

The interior racking in the Mobile Decon Unit can hold 100 sets of turnout gear and associated PPE.

For the department’s new Mobile Decon Unit, Pasco County worked with Meiko to custom-design two SCBA and PPE multi-washer decon machines that could be installed on the new truck to clean and sanitize turnout gear and other PPE. Cassin notes the new truck serves as a full-service distribution point for 100 sets of turnout gear, gloves, hoods, boots, and helmets. “Instead of having a second set of turnout gear for each of our firefighters, we use the Mobile Decon Unit as a distribution point to replace any firefighter’s contaminated gear,” he adds.

The Mobile Decon Unit has two custom designed Meiko decon machines, one on each side of the rear of the truck, that can clean and sanitize turnout gear, hoods, gloves, boots, helmets, and SCBAs.

Santa Clara County Fire Department Takes Delivery of Two Smeal Custom Rescue Pumpers

BRANDON, SD – May 31, 2002Spartan Emergency Response, a subsidiary of REV Group® and leading manufacturer of fire apparatus, is pleased to announce the Santa Clara County Fire Department has taken delivery of two new Smeal Custom Rescue Pumpers. These fire trucks were sold by Fire Apparatus Solutions, an authorized Smeal dealer.

Key features of the Smeal Custom Rescue Pumpers include:

These pumpers will primarily serve in wildland/urban interface areas where they carry out truck company duties on structure fires. However, they also offer technical rescue services for vehicle collisions on major highway systems, according to David Snow, Director of Support Services for the Santa Clara County Fire Department in California.

“The Santa Clara County Fire Department is pleased to take delivery of two rescue pumpers that will replace two similar units,” Snow said. “The primary role of these new vehicles is fire suppression; however, they also fulfill essential functions within rescue and support operations within our service area.”

“We were honored to produce these two trucks at our Snyder, NE, facility,” said Chris Wade, Director of Sales, Spartan Emergency Response. “Santa Clara County Fire has designed a thoroughly researched, multi-mission rescue pumper for any services needed by the community. They used their experience of previous generations of apparatus to continue meeting the maturing scenarios they find themselves in. We are proud to partner with them in completing functional, attractive units.”

Newport News (VA) Plans to Build Three New Fire Stations

Newport News plans to build fire stations in three different sections of the city in an effort to improve response times, with the first facility coming to the northern part of the city for a bit over $5 million, reports Yahoo.

City council voted Tuesday to appropriate more than $5.3 million to build a new Station 11 at the intersection of Turnberry and McManus boulevards, the report notes.

Rescue 2 and Technical Rescue 10, assigned to the north side, have been working out of a temporary station on leased property at the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport since 2008, with the lease about to end. The building has seen numerous maintenance problems to boot, the report says.

The second planned station would serve the Menchville area, with its funding beginning with the 2024 budget.

Also, the city is looking to set aside funds for a new Station 8 in the central district, replacing a facility that was built in 1958, the report says. Newport News is ready to begin setting aside funding for the $8.6 million project via its 2025 budget, the report says.

Lino Lakes (MN) to Buy $182k 2004 Replacement for Aerial 11

Lino Lakes fire officials say they’re fortunate to have found a used apparatus to replace Aerial 11, which was taken out of service due to a structural issue, reports northmetrotv.com. City council recently approved buying a replacement but only as a temporary solution.

Aerial 11’s body, engine, and transmission are still fine, but it’s corrosion on the frame that’s the problem, according to the report. Officials say the apparatus is beyond repair, and crews have begun removing reusable parts.

The department then needed a replacement, and supply-chain issues were only delaying any possible delivery dates to two or three years.

The department found a 2004 model in WI for about $182,000, the report says. However, the apparatus isn’t everything the deaprtment needs, and the department is still using two aging smaller trucks.

The plan, according to the report, is to put down a specification for two new water tender pumpers and eventually replace the 2004 truck. The aim is to make those changes in the next few years.
