After Securing State Grant, Washington (CA) Seeks FEMA Grant for New Engine

According to a report from The Union, after having already secured a $101,024 grant from the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), the community of Washington is now applying for a $200,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which, if approved, will go toward buying a new truck for the Washington Fire Department (WFD).

Part of the Cal OES grant is expected to be used to purchase battery-operated radios for the WFD.

Nevada City, California, Councilman Doug Fleming, along with MD&M Consulting and WFD Colin Stewart, were instrumental in securing the $101,024 grant for the town. They have already submitted another grant request, this one to FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants program, for around $200,000.

If awarded, the $200,000 grant would go toward purchasing a new fire truck as well as water pumps that could access the nearby South Fork Yuba River to help fight fires, if needed.

The WFD’s current firefighting engine dates back to 1981.

East Grand (CO) Fire District Plans for New Station

To meet predicted growth in the area the East Grand, CO, Fire District is considering building a new fire station south of town, according to a report published by Ski-Hi News.

Officials with the fire district recently presented plans for the new station between the Old Town and Winter Park Resort on town-owned land, the newspaper reported.

The paper reported the goal was to build a two-bay fire station with residences for employees and volunteers and space for the Grand County EMS and local law enforcement. When finished it would be approximately 11,300 square feet.

In 2017, a design concept for the station was completed, but officials know it will need to be updated and the cost of the project will have likely gone up too, the newspaper reported.

Local officials hope to have a groundbreaking ceremony for the new station in summer 2022, the newspaper reported.
