Follow-up: Tumwater woman pleads guilty to arson in trailer fire north of Ellensburg

A Tumwater woman accused of arson outside Ellensburg earlier this year was sentenced to four-and-a-half months in jail Monday after accepting a plea deal on reduced charges. Cassandra Jo Funk, 33, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on an accusation of first-degree arson. Authorities allege she set two trailers ablaze overnight on Jan.

Live fire burn training exercise a success for Orcas Island Fire & Rescue

Orcas Island Fire & Rescue conducted a successful Live Fire Burn Training Exercise on Saturday, Feb. 24. The Glenwood Inn property near the north shore provided an invaluable opportunity for our firefighters to gain practical experience in a controlled environment. The opportunity to train at the Glenwood Inn site, both during the burn and in the months preceding, provided our existing firefighters and new recruits with real-world training scenarios in a manner that cannot be perfectly replicated using training props.

VIDEOS: Fire fills night sky as Ohio building goes up in flames

Crews closed a portion of East 55th Street in Cleveland early Thursday morning due to an overnight fire at a building on Lake Court. 3News' Austin Love reported live from the scene all morning where the flames have since been extinguished. We're told 11 fire companies responded to the incident. While nobody was hurt, the building's roof reportedly collapsed.

New York governor announces state's new volunteer firefighter stipend program

VIDEO: Governor Kathy Hochul announced that there will be a new program designed to strengthen New York State's volunteer firefighter services. The first training stipend of $10 million will offset the costs of training courses that firefighters are required to complete. “Volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line to protect those in their communities, and it is time that we recognize and compensate them for the work that they have done,” Governor Hochul said.

Deadly Connecticut fires have struck ‘one after another after another,’ killing 15 since January

Fifteen people were killed in fires in the first two months of 2024 in Connecticut, making it the most deadly start to the year in at least a decade, according to data from state fire officials. “A couple of years, we’ve had starts like this,” said Roger Nelson, a Bloomfield fire marshal and vice president of the Connecticut Fire Marshals Association.
