Mt. Juliet (TN) Gets Closer to Building New Fire Station

According to a report from The Wilson Post, the seven-year wait for a new Mt. Juiet (TN) Fire Department (MJFD) station may be coming to a close after designs were completed last week and city officials now plan to review qualifying bids the final week of April.

MTFD Chief Jamie Luffman stated that a request for bids goes out March 24, with the town targeting the first week of May to begin construction.

Mt. Juliet purchased land from Wilson County Schools near Green Hill High School for $200,000. Construction costs for the station will be $3 million.

The new station will be 10,000 square feet in size with three bays. It will house an engine, a ladder truck, one ambulance, and (most likely) REHAB 23. Luffman will request nine new firefighters to man the station at a cost of $460,000 annually.

The city’s south-side fire station was operated on property tax funds the past seven years. It is currently funded out of the city’s general budget, similar to other city budgets; the same applies for the north station.

Plans Move Forward for New Holyoke (CO) Fire Station

According to a report from The Holyoke Enterprise, plans for a new Holyoke (CO) Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) station at the southwest corner of the intersection of West Denver Street and South Belford Avenue moved forward at the recent Holyoke City Council meeting on March 16.

The council voted unanimously to open the project up for bids and go with a general contractor rather than piece it together with several bids for different aspects of the project.

Among many station Council members discussed things like the height of the fire station’s bay doors. Mayor Orville Tonsing said that the council needed to choose between 14- or 16-foot doors and whether to make all six doors the same height. The original plan called for 14-foot doors.

Bittner expressed concern about the possibility of having all six doors the same height because of the height of the building in the corners, and he said he thought it would be better to have two 16-foot doors in the center and two 14-foot doors on either side. Tonsing said he thought they should all be 16 feet tall, and the two contractors he spoke to said it was possible to do so.

HVFD Chief Stacy Rueter said that, by keeping the bay doors the same height, the department wouldn’t need to park certain trucks in certain bays. So, the council decided to have all doors the same height at 16 feet.

Council members chose to have forced ventilation, heating, and air-conditioning in the office area of the building because the space could eventually be used for public functions.

New South Portland (ME) Fire Department Station Ready to Open in May

According to a report from The Southern Forecaster, the South Portland (ME) Fire Department’s (SPFD’s) new $7.5 million station at Cash Corner is expected to be open for business on May 12.

The station will feature many upgrades and improvements over its 1970s predecessor, one of which is a stairwell, which will provide several “extras” to create ample opportunities for training the SPFD’s firefighters.

Another feature will be working pipes to allow firefighters to train in tapping into a building’s water system.

Halfway up the stairs, a small landing with a panel that opens onto the station’s main bay is the same height off the landing as a window might be in a typical house. SPFD Captain Jeffrey Rogers said trainees will be able to set up ladders and use the panel to simulate climbing into a second-story window.

In addition, at the top of the stairwell is a removable metal handrail can be used along with red metal beams. The beams have brass rings built into them that can hold a person’s weight for drilling on rappelling techniques and similar ropework.

Remerton (GA) Fire Department’s Incoming Ladder Truck to Aid Community

According to a report from WALB, the Remerton (GA) Fire Department (RFD) is working to improve services to people who frequent the area. One of these ways they can handle the increasing call volume is with do so is with a new ladder truck, which will play a crucial role for calls to apartments with multiple floors.

RFD Chief James Horne said call volumes have surged in the past two years and continues to increase, with 75 percent of them being medical calls. House fires are the least likely.

The RFD expects the new truck, funded by the state’s fireworks tax, to arrive in the summer, along with new hoses.

The new equipment will allow them to serve more people at one time as well as help neighboring areas, when needed.
