New Fire Station to Open in Fort Leonard Wood (MO)

According to a report from The Rolla Daily News, the Fort Leonard Wood (MO) Fire Department (FLWFD) will open its latest fire station, Fire Station No. 3, Building 2375, on January 22. Located on Oklahoma Avenue, the new 17,000-square-foot station will help firefighters on post meet certain time and distance response standards in the eastern parts of the cantonment area.

It is only the second new fire station Bowling said he’s seen constructed in 30 years.

FLWFD Chief Brad Bowling said the department will now be able to have trucks on scene within seven minutes. Bowling also said the station will house one engine that was moved over from Fire Station No. 1 on the west side of the cantonment area. It can also accommodate five firefighters: four during any shift and one rotated out on off days.

In addition, the new station features offices and classrooms for headquarters leadership, training, and inspection staff as well as a larger parking lot to “ease the flow of traffic.”

Headquarters and fire prevention staff eventually moved into Bldg. 625, near the corner of Iowa and Replacement avenues, but “there is no kitchen, no showers, no facilities and we are also operating there 24 hours a day,” Bowling said.

Bowling said the FLWFD tweaked some designs from buildings built by the U.S. Department of Defense to give the new station a more “homely” feel. FLWFD firefighters work a minimum of 144 hours every two weeks, making it, practically, their “second home.”

Local Artist’s Work Featured in Scottsdale (AZ) Fire Station

On December 3, 2020, the Scottsdale (AZ) Fire Department’s (SFD’s) Fire Station 603 opened on Indian Bend Road to serve the communities and resorts in the northern area of Indian Bend Wash.

Adorning the interior of the new station are two new pieces of original public artworks: “Rug Runner” and “Wallpaper Tapestry” by Tempe-based artist Christine Lee.

The two-part project was completed in early December. On December 9, it was officially accessioned into the City of Scottsdale Permanent Art Collection. “Rug Runner” is a custom terrazzo floor, while “Wallpaper Tapestry” is a dichroic film window treatment.

SFD Assistant Chief Ryan Freeburg said the department was interested in a public art installation that would welcome the community into the new station.

The new fire station is the second in Scottsdale to receive an artist-designed terrazzo floor. However, “Rug Runner” extends outside the building and features solar-charged luminescent chips that give off a soft glow after dark. Lee designed the custom terrazzo floor in combination with “Wallpaper Tapestry,” which can be found adjacent to the indoor portion of the terrazzo flooring.

Lee thanked the members of Fire Station 603 for the “Hard work and compassion they give to the strangers they encounter every day.”

New Goodyear (AZ) Fire Station Opens With Focus on Health and Safety

According to a report from KTAR, the Goodyear (AZ) Fire Department (GFD) announced the official opening of a new fire station that will focus on the health and safety of its firefighters.

Goodyear Fire Station No. 186, situated northeast of Willis and Rainbow Valley roads, is a 12,587-square-foot facility that features two corridors: one designated for turnout gear decontamination and another that will allow firefighters to flush potential contaminants from their bodies as soon as they return to the station.

Most fire stations don’t have these health facilities; larger fires usually feature areas on the fireground where firefighters can decon.

The facility also includes is a vestibule that separates the areas where members eat/sleep and work.

GFD Deputy Chief Tom Cole said that the department has listened to its members’ voices as well as experts from around the country to integrate best practices and ideas into a design that protects its firefighters.

In December 2019, the Goodyear City Council approved funding for the two new fire stations, putting a heavy emphasis on firefighters’ safety and improving response times for the community.

The second of those stations, No. 181, located on 143rd Avenue between Van Buren Street and Celebrate Life Way, is expected to be completed this spring.

The new procedures go along with Goodyear’s clean-cab fire truck system, which requires firefighters to store their gear in separate compartments within apparatus to limit contaminant exposure.

Cedar Rapids (IA) Fire Department Adds Stick Ladder Truck to Its Fleet

According to a report from KHAK, the Cedar Rapids (IA) Fire Department (CRFD) announced on Monday that they are conducting their final inspection of a new addition to the city’s fleet of fire-fighting equipment: A 107-foot Pierce Ascendant stick ladder truck.

The new ladder truck will be assigned to Station 7 (L7 on side of the vehicle), one of three fire stations on Cedar Rapids’ northeast side. Built in 1999, according to the city Web site, it’s located at 206 29th Street NE. The city features nine fire stations.

According to CRFD Assistant Chief Andy Olesen, the CRFD will have 18 apparatus with the new addition. He continued, noting that 11 of their 18 apparatus are in front-line service each day. This also includes eight engines, two ladders (with Ladder 7), and one rescue. The other seven apparatus are used by the CRFD while others undergo maintenance, when there’s a high volume of calls, or for training.

When Ladder 7 arrives, the CRFD will have four reserve engines, one reserve rescue, and two reserve ladder trucks.
