What'S Up With That Old Fire Truck?

The fire truck is an American LaFrance 750 pumper that was shipped to Greeneville on Dec. 8, 1955. Founded in 1873, American LaFrance built fire engines, fire aerials, and other emergency vehicles until 2014, when the company ceased operations.

The owners of this particular fire truck — Alice Cupp and her husband, Chance Minnick — purchased the vehicle about two to three months ago from some people in Knoxville. At the same time, the couple purchased some equipment for a new restaurant they’re planning to open.

They thought it would look good sitting outside their restaurant, plus it could be used for promotions and events, maybe even in parades. The only problem was the parking lot wasn’t really large enough to hold the vintage vehicle. The solution? Ask a friend for help.

Danbury To Rebuild Two Firetrucks For Price Of One Brand New Truck

The pair of 2008 pumper trucks will cost $600,000 to completely rebuild, instead of the roughly $750,000 per truck the department would have to pay to buy new, Fire Chief T.J. Wiedl said.

“It’s really a huge savings for the city and, these days, I have to be cost effective,” Wiedl said. “We were really on the cutting edge when we did this with our ladder truck a few years ago, but now just about everyone is opting for this route because it’s such a substantial savings.”

The trucks will be rebuilt from the chassis up — one will even have its chassis rebuilt — and returned as basically new vehicles by national firetruck firm Pierce Manufacturing, Wiedl said.

Although they’re 10 years old, the upgrades will make the pair the new primary vehicles in the department’s fleet of six pumper trucks and two ladder trucks.

New Hayward (CA) Fire Station And Training Center At Airport Get OK

A mid-sized aircraft, similar to a Gulfstream jet, also will be available as a prop that can be set alight so firefighters can practice extinguishing blazes and pulling people from confined spaces.

The $60 million project, a partnership between the city and Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, also will replace the Hayward Fire Department’s Station 6 at the airport near Interstate 880.

“To have the the opportunity for our region to train using our Bay Area Rapid Transit system was a real priority in the construction and design” of the center and station, fire Chief Garrett Contreras told the Planning Commission Oct. 25, when it unanimously took action to get the project built.
