Firefighting class in New Jersey helps first responders deal with autism

A New Jersey firefighter has started teaching classes to firefighters, and other first responders about what to do if they respond to a situation where a person, more specifically a child, is on the autism spectrum. Donald Colarusso, president of All Hands Fire Equipment and Training in Neptune City, said it's important to make first responders aware of certain encounters where a person with autism may not welcome what the firefighters would consider a routine engagement.

Airway Heights Fire Dept. hiring part-time firefighters for first time ever as city grows

The Inland Northwest is booming with growth and the City of Airway Heights isn’t excluded. The city is trying to hire part-time firefighters for the first time, so it can meet the need of its community. Fire Chief Mitch Metzger and his crew are busier than ever, and it’s not even wildfire season yet.

Unvaccinated firefighters face termination in King County

Several firefighters in King County say they’ll be out of a job because they have not been vaccinated for COVID-19. Unvaccinated firefighters at Eastside Fire and Rescue said their exemptions have not been accommodated. Captain Frank Dahlquist said he has been on the frontlines for more than 15 years.

Crews investigate cause of Tacoma residential fire

The cause of a fire in East Tacoma early Monday morning is under investigation, crews said. The Tacoma Fire Department responded to the residential fire around 1:46 a.m. on E Harrison St. All occupants were able to escape before firefighters arrived, crews said, and one of the three pets inside died.

Man charged with arson and malicious mischief following Millwood SWAT standoff

A standoff with SWAT on Thursday ended peacefully, but investigation into the incident have resulted in charges against the suspect, 42-year-old Manuel Garcia. Before the standoff, Spokane County Sheriff's deputies responded to a fire call on the 7800 block of E. Columbia Dr. The caller said their family member was an addict and caused the fire, but wasn't sure if it was intentional.
