Maine Maritime Academy to Build Four-Story Training Facility

The Maine Maritime Academy has plans to soon break ground for a four-story fire training facility at the Center for Professional Mariner Development, reports bangordailynews.com. The aim is to allow mariners to practice fighting fires in ship-like conditions.

COVID-19 has delayed the project, but it was put out to bid this month and officials expect construction to be completed by the end of the year, the report says. The 3,500-square-foot facility should be ready for use at the start of 2023.

The building will be able to emulate growing and dying fires on a boat to meet mariner certification needs. The report notes that there is no other similar facility in eastern ME—possibly the entire state.

Downey (CA) Fire Department’s Station 4 Set for Repair

Work to repair Downey Fire Department’s Station 4 was recently approved, following a February 25 fire that left the facility uninhabitable, reports thedowneypatriot.com.

The fire caused no injuries, aside from the building, which is located at 9349 Florence Ave. Officials estimate it will cost upward of $600,000 to repair everything; that will be handled via an insurance claim.

City officials say the fire most likely started in an exterior wall on the second floor, with a malfunctioning electrical system the culprit. The walls and floors sustained water damage from the sprinkler system.

Parts of the roof, some interior and exterior walls, and ceilings were removed during crews’ attempts to extinguish the flames, according to the report.

Crews will continue operating out of Stations 1 and 3 until Station 4 is back up and running.
