Somerville (MA) Fire Department Getting New Station

A new Somerville fire station will be located on the corner of Middlesex Avenue and Foley Street in Assembly Row, though ground has not yet been broken for it, city officials tell FA. It will be a 10,000-square-foot, ground-level firehouse in a new development, the city says on its website.

The fire station will include three apparatus bays with decontamination facilities for both the city’s professional force as well as an Auxiliary Firefighter Unit, and associated locker rooms, fitness room, individual bunk rooms, meeting space, and a kitchen. The firehouse (fossil-fuel-free) has environmentally sustainable features including:

  • Air-source heat pumps
  • Energy recovery unit
  • Red-list-free materials

The fire station will have glass bays facing Middlesex Avenue, which aim to liven the street front and provide critical life-safety city services to the community. The firehouse will serve as a welcoming presence at a key entry road into the neighborhood.

The working team will have bunk rooms and social spaces to fit their needs. Bedding, desking, locker storage, and meeting space will benefit this professional group through use of space that is efficient, durable, and high-performance. The day-to-day life of both professional and volunteer firefighters, and the nature of their transient occupancy within the station, was researched through working sessions with users in order to create a unique experience that both livens and keeps the community safe.
