Large garage fire draws huge firefighter response on South Hill

A fire that destroyed a large garage Wednesday afternoon on Spokane’s South Hill drew a major response from area agencies and forced road closures. Spokane County Fire District 8 Assistant Chief Chris Wyrobek said units contained the blaze to the garage at 6626 S. Regal Road, but smoke caused some damage inside the home.

Driver Crashes into Cal Fire Station

A driver in a work pickup went off the road and ran into the Cal Fire building on Old Highway 80 near Pine Valley Road around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, reports sandiegouniontribune.com.

Firefighters were woken up by a loud boom, which caused minor damage to the facility, the report says. They went to investigate the noise and found that a Chevy Silverado had slammed into the side of their station.

Officials say the station’s sleeping quarters are right above the point of impact.

The driver was extricated, and, after being checked out by paramedics, he was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the report. California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Ghana National Fire Service Saddened About Fatal Accident that Injured Five Firefighters

The Ghana National Fire Service says it is saddened by Tuesday’s fatal accident that involved five of its officers as they were responding to a fire at Atebubu.

It happened after a motorcycle and the fire apparatus on which they were travelling collided at a section of the Kwame Danso-Atebubu road in the Bono East Region, according to a report on citinewsroom.com.

The report notes that the motorcyclist tried to pass the apparatus, which led to it flipping three time before landing on its roof. The motorcycle passenger is reported to have died in the crash.

The apparatus is said to be damaged beyond repair, while the five firefighters were airlifted to a hospital in Accra for medical attention.

“Management wishes once again to assure the entire Personnel of the Service and the public that, the safety of fireman [sic] remains the ultimate priority and will continue to ensure a safe and conducive working environment for all personnel,” the statement says.

Alton (IL) Fire Department Loses Ladder Truck

The Alton Fire Department battled a doublewide trailer fire on Saturday evening in the 300 block of Aladdin. The department suffered no injuries to any crew members, but it lost its ladder truck in the process, reports riverbender.com.

Officials say the apparatus will be out of commission for a while. They say the once-repaired wiring harness burned through the airline and locked up the brakes, the report says. It had to be towed back to the firehouse.

‘Armed’ Man Threatens Suicide at Watertown (SD) Fire Station

Police in Watertown were called to a downtown fire station early Tuesday for reports of an allegedly intoxicated, armed man who was threatening suicide, according to westport-news.com.

Police officials say they responded just prior to 3 a.m. to find the man exiting the station lobby armed with a pistol. The suspect refused to comply with officers’ commands and threatened to kill himself, the report says.

The suspect was pelted with rounds of bean bags and was then taken into custody to address his mental health. The report notes the pistol turned out to be an airsoft gun.
