Serving the whole community: Including veterans in your recruitment & retention efforts

November 11 is Veterans Day, a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their service, dedication, and sacrifice. The theme for Veterans Day 2023 is “Service.” This week, consider how your department supports and recognizes your current and potential members who have served in the U.S. military. Joseph Danao is the deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, a fire instructor, a volunteer firefighter/EMT, and a member of the National Volunteer Fire Council’s SAFER Work Group, among other positions.

Georgia firefighters brave the heat with hot wings challenge

VIDEO: A spicy challenge had Hall County firefighters laughing and gasping for air as they tackled insanely hot wings while answering questions. Like the YouTube series "Hot Ones," hosted by Sean Evans, where celebrities answer questions while enduring increasingly spicy wings, three Hall County Fire Rescue team members decided to try the idea themselves.

Yakima firefighters grapple with surge in overdoses as Narcan supply dwindles

Tuesday, Yakima firefighters posted to Facebook saying they had a total of 15 overdoses within a 24-hour span, not including calls from the previous day or ones that they were currently working on. Since that post, they say the number increased to around 17 or 18 with a majority of the calls near the North First Street area.

Car completely totaled after crashing through side of Everett home

PHOTO: A car crashed into the side of an Everett home Wednesday afternoon. Everett Fire said the collision involved two cars, one completely totaled after ramming into a house on 7400 Beverly Lane. Firefighters extracted a person from one of the cars with non-life-threatening injuries. Utility wires were involved and Everett PUD has responded as well.

Voters support $18 million bond for Yakima County Fire District 5 enhancements

Voters are approving an $18 million bond that would pay for significant upgrades in the Yakima County Fire District, according to Tuesday night’s preliminary election results. So far, the bond was being approved by 65.9% of the total, or 1,319 votes to 681, preliminary results showed. The bond measure would cost residents $0.
