Michigan city's firefighters saved by $2 million federal grant

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee's office sent an email Wednesday afternoon, July 29, proudly announcing Saginaw will receive a $2 million grant that will prevent 13 firefighters from being laid off this fall. About 15 minutes later, about a dozen firefighters jumped into their turnout gear and sped toward a fire on Saginaw's East Side.

Dispatcher failed caller, Albuquerque fire chief says

Albuquerque Fire Chief David Downey says 17-year-old Esperanza Quintero did everything right when she called 911 as part of a desperate attempt to save her friend who had been shot. “The young lady … couldn’t have been doing it better. She was outstanding. The problem was she needed support,” Downey said in a Journal interview.

Detroit firefighter watches his own home burn

Detroit firefighter Donavan Dickerson got the call about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday that his house was burning from top to bottom. He was suddenly trying to put out a fire right where he lives. "I helped them put the hose up ... that's all I could do. I didn't have any gear," he said. It's a house with a rich Detroit history, and it's been in Dickerson's family for decades.

Illinois firefighters use drone to battle house fire

VIDEO: Firefighters used a drone to battle a house fire that may have been caused by lightning in south suburban Orland Park. The fire chief said flames were seen on the roof of a two-story home in the 10800-block of Scarlet Drive just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. When firefighters arrived on scene they found flames spreading across the roof and through the attic.

Fire Truck Crashes into New York Casino Shuttle Bus, 10 Hurt

PHOTOS: Ten people were injured after a fire engine collided with a casino shuttle bus Wednesday evening. Yonkers fire engine 313 crashed into the driver's side of an Empire City Casino bus around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Kimball and Yonkers avenues. Firefighters from station 13, just a few hundred feet from the intersection, were responding to a fire alarm at 41 Maple Place when their truck hit the bus, Yonkers Fire Commissioner John Darcy said.
