Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell signed a new ordinance into effect that gives the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) the authority to order the demolition of unsafe, vacant buildings. The idea is to remove these dangerous structures, not only to prevent fire but to also protect firefighters from injury or death and to prevent these fires from spreading to neighboring structures.

VIDEO: A new device is being implemented in fire departments across the state of Maine, keeping the first few moments of birth special for newborns and their mothers. Authorities are investigating the theft of nearly 100 fire hydrants in Los Angeles County this year, sheriff’s officials said Monday. Some 85 hydrants have been stolen in unincorporated areas of the county, and another 14 in Lynwood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The department’s Century Station has partnered with the LASD Major Crimes Bureau to investigate the thefts.
