Broadmoor (CO) Adds New Apparatus to Firefighting Fleet

Broadmoor (CO) Fire Protection District has bought a new fire apparatus designed to protect large structures from advancing wildland fires, according to a report published by The Colorado Springs Gazette.

The $320,000 truck, built by Darley, features a state-of-the-art compressed air foam system with 500-gallons of water and a 750 gallon per minute pump, capable of producing thousands of gallons of thick foam, the newspaper reported.

The city has been saving money for the purchase for 10 years, so there was no need for a loan for the new truck, according to the report.

The new truck meets the fire protection district’s needs and is low profile giving it the ability and maneuverability to navigate the tight streets in the area, the paper reported.

Davenport (IA) Moves Forward with New Fire Station Plan

Davenport (IA) aldermen voted to award a $383,600 contract to start the design and engineering work for a new fire station slated to be built by 2024, according to a report published by the Quad-City Times.

The city previously purchased land a about a mile from the current station which was built in the 1960s, according to the report.

An operational study done in 2018 suggested the city needed a new fire station for a variety of reasons, including the need to improve response times to the northern part of the city which has seen increased call volumes as the city grows, according to the newspaper.

For the design and engineering work, the city had appropriated $400,000 and included construction of the new station in its 6-year capital improvement plan, according to the newspaper, that reported the total cost for the project has not been determined but will be funded tax dollars through bonding.

Andover (MA) Firefighters Decommission Old Fire Station

Andover (MA) firefighters decommissioned a 131-year-old fire station with the help of the USS Constitution honor guard taking down the flag to march it to be raised at the new fire station down the street, according to a report published by The Eagle-Tribune adding the trucks were also backed into the new facility during the same ceremony.

The move to get a new fire station in the historic southwest part of the town has been years in the making with the approval of the new Ballardvale fire station won in 2018 with appropriate of $8 million for the project, the newspaper reported. The building was supposed to be completed early this spring, but the pandemic delayed the project, the newspaper reported.

As a tribute to the old station, the new station is adorned with a weathervane featuring two horses, representing Sam and Jerry, the two original equine that carried firefighting equipment when the station first opened, according to the newspaper report.

Greeneville (TN) Breaks Ground on New Fire Station

The Greeneville (TN) Fire Department broke ground on a new fire station today, Aug. 31, to replace a station that was built in the late 1950s, according to a report published by The Greeneville Sun.

The newspaper reported the new, $3.66 million station will be about 9,000 square feet, house a frontline engine, a reserve engine and full equipped hazmat response unit with space for a future emergency operations center.

The station will also have three drive-through apparatus bays and serve the south side of the city and have decontamination rooms to keep carcinogens from the living quarters of the building, the newspaper said.

It will be one of four stations maintained by the community, the newspaper reported.

Steubenville (OH) Gets $761K Grant for New Aerial Fire Truck

With a $761,000 grant, the Steubenville (OH) Fire Department will be purchasing a new aerial with a 55-foot ladder, according to a report published by the Herald-Star.

The city was notified on Friday, Aug. 27, that a FEMA Assistance to Firefighter grant was award to the city, according to the report. Steubenville will pay a $39,000 match to receive the funds.

The grant money will be used to replace a 1996 TeleSqurt that has some mechanical issues costing the department as much as $15,000 to maintain, according to the newspaper report.

Now that the grant has been secured, the department is trying to determine exactly what kind of apparatus it wants, whether it’s another TeleSqurt, or a quint or a straight aerial, the newspaper reported. In any event, the city is prepared to wait several months for delivery, the paper added.
