Man gets 12 years for 2021 apartment shooting, explosion that wounded Texas firefighters

The man who shot into a southeast Oak Cliff apartment in 2021, severing a gas line and causing an explosion that injured several people, including Dallas firefighters, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Wednesday, according to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. Phillip Dankins, 30, was sentenced to 12 years on a drug charge and 12 years on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm, the DA’s office said.

New York City firefighters seen cutting apart truck that got wedged in tunnel, causing traffic nightmare

PHOTOS: A truck got stuck in a New York City tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan causing a miles-long traffic jam, resulting in firefighters sawing apart the vehicle's trailer, officials said. The 18-wheel tractor-trailer truck became wedged about a mile into the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel on Thursday morning, and it took responding crews around two hours to remove the vehicle, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Washington Army National Guard to get new firefighting unit

Beginning next fiscal year, the Washington Army National Guard will have a new unit primarily focused on firefighting. “The addition of engineer firefighting teams will provide tactical firefighting capability to the Pacific Northwest,” said Brig. Gen. Paul Sellars, commanding general of the Washington Army National Guard.

Yakima shelves regional fire authority plan after neighboring fire districts object

Yakima’s plan for an Upper Valley regional fire authority is off the table for the time being. Yakima City Manager Bob Harrison and Fire Chief Aaron Markham said a feasibility study is on hold due to opposition from the fire districts that would be candidates for joining the proposed authority. “Without any interest from our partners in participating in a regional fire authority, that is no longer an option for the city to consider,” Harrison said.
