South Texas College educates fire academy cadets about cancer risks

VIDEO: Being a first responder can be a dangerous job, and for firefighters, there is an additional health risk; they can be exposed to cancer causing chemicals while fighting fires. "It's scary, but I know what I am getting myself into. It's a risk I am able to take to help my community," STC fire cadet Andrew Cervantes said.

A federal agency wants to give safety tips to young adults, so it's dropping an album

The federal agency responsible for promoting the safety of consumer products has employed plenty of tactics over the years, from recalls to regulations to PSAs. Now, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is trying a new — and catchier — approach: It's released an album. We're Safety Now Haven't We packs in six genre-spanning, safety-focused songs (seven if you count the one that also got a Spanglish version).

Seven fires burning in Olympic National Park; one evidence of what could come with climate change

Visible from the smoke they’re emitting, seven fires are burning within the wilderness of Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula. Lightning strikes ignited the fires Aug. 28, and all were burning relatively small until this past weekend, when the Delabarre fire took advantage of hot, dry conditions and took off like a bandit, growing to over 3,500 acres.

Update: Spokane arson suspect now charged with setting five more fires on August 3

VIDEO: A Spokane woman who previously admitted to setting fires in Spokane's West Hills neighborhood now says those weren't the only blazes she started on the same day. Vickie Smith has been in the Spokane County Jail since August 15 after she was arrested five days prior in Tukwila and extradited.

'Several' cats die in Bothell house fire

Several cats died in an early morning house fire in Bothell, according to Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue (SRFR). Two adults and three children were able to safely evacuate from the home. An elderly adult living in an RV next to the property was able to evacuate with help. Crews were called to the fire at a manufactured home on the 19700 block of 43rd Avenue Southeast.
