Terre Haute (IN) Board Approves Purchase of Fire Trucks from Pierce

According to a report from Tribune-Star, the Terre Haute, Indiana, Board of Public Works and Safety OK’d the purchase of two new pumper trucks, one with foam capabilities, from Pierce Manufacturing, at a cost of more than $1.11 million.

Terre Haute Fire Department (THFD) Chief Jeff Fisher said that Pierce will honor 2020 pricing for the equipment. THFD is now in its year 22nd year of a 30-year replacement plan for equipment replacement.

Fisher also said it will take about 10 to 11 months to get the new trucks, so they will arrive just after the start of 2022.

The trucks being replaced will move into a “reserve” status, to be used when other trucks are down for maintenance. The reserve trucks will help to lower the city’s Insurance Services Office rating, which decreases insurance costs for homes in the city.

Study will help support and protect women in the fire service

As more women join the fire service, it’s imperative to understand the occupational risks involved for these women. And thanks to $1.5 million dollar grant from FEMA that will be possible. The funding will help support research to examine how being a firefighter affects women’s health. “There’s the fires, the smoke that we breathe in, but it’s also the exhaust from the fire trucks, the ambulances that we get exposed to on a daily basis,” said Captain Liliana Pesqueira, the Tucson Fire Department.
