The finishing touches are being put on a new fire station for Mount Pleasant, reports WCSC 5.

The new $6MM fire station will be the most up-to-date facility of the seven fire stations in Mount Pleasant. The fire station will have fire equipment that includes search and rescue, fire hose deployment, ground ladder training, and confined space and technical rescue training.

The fire station has a new three-apparatus bay for two fire trucks and one Battalion Chief vehicle, 11 sleeping rooms, a brand-new fitness center, and additional office space for Battalion Chiefs and other staff.

Canada’s Killarney-Turtle Mountain Fire Department Seeks New Brush Truck

According to a report from Discover Westman, the Killarney-Turtle Mountain Fire Department (KTMFD) in Manitoba, Canada, may soon gets its much desired brush truck from a conditional grant from the province for close to $145,000.

Chief Administrative Officer Karen Patterson said the municipality looked at all the KTMFD’s needs when it was applying for the Fire Protection Grant through the Manitoba Government. The brush truck was at the top of the list.

The municipality is also looking at upgrading their 1969 water tanker sometime in the future. Patterson said the new brush truck will complement the new water truck in fighting grass fires once they’re both purchased.

At the time of the grant application, the new truck was approximately just under the $145,000. However, Patterson said that, in the time since the pre-Christmas quote, prices have risen, so the municipality may come up short. The municipality is expecting the new truck to be purchased within the next few weeks, hopefully by the end of March.

A total of $5 Million of eligible funding was awarded by the Province of Manitoba through the Fire Protection Grant. However, the province also received $18 million in applications. As a result, not all grant applications will receive funding.

Maury (NC) Volunteer Fire-Rescue to Add New Substation

According to a report from The Standard, financial savings could be on the way for residents served by Maury (NC) Volunteer Fire-Rescue (MVFR).

A new fire substation will be located at 5846 N.C. 258, allowing the MVFR to serve its district with faster response times. It will also help the MVFD achieve a better insurance rating.

Thanks to efficient financial planning and changes at the state level, the MVFR can now construct a substation, allowing it to achieve a lower rating.

Insurance ratings are determined by Office of the State Fire Marshal and are based off a number of factors including proximity to the station, equipment, and training.

Positive ratings suggest that a fire department is well equipped to respond to fires and can significantly lower homeowners’ insurance rates. Currently, Maury has a rating of “5” for structures within five miles of its current station. Beyond that, the rating changes to “9,” with the exception of the MVFR’s “no man land.”

The MVFR has been working since the 1980s to reduce its rating, with little success.

The change allowed for the MVFR to staff its substation with a minimum of four firefighters instead of eight. The station was also in good financial standing, having completed the debt service for the station.
