This week in 1951, clerk set fire to Michigan building, destroying thousands of records

Michigan’s Lewis Cass building made headlines last summer when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer renamed it the Elliott-Larsen building. But this week 70 years ago, Michigan’s oldest standing state office building was in the news for something else entirely: a massive fire lit by a state employee who hoped it would help him avoid the Korean War.

How Immediate Naloxone Access Is Going 24/7 in Indiana

The state of Indiana is dedicating tens of thousands of federal dollars to making naloxone, the opioid-involved overdose reversal medication, publicly available every day and around the clock. On February 5, Governor Eric Holcomb announced that the state will be partnering with the harm reduction nonprofit Overdose Lifeline to bring NaloxBoxes—hard acrylic boxes that can be mounted to an exterior wall—to all 92 Indiana counties.

Crews battle 2 boat fires on Tacoma waterfront

PHOTOS: Crews battled two boat fires that erupted on the Tacoma waterfront overnight. Firefighters raced to the scene, on the Thea Foss Waterway in the 700 block of Dock Street, at about 2:20 a.m. after receiving reports of two vessels engulfed in flames with people possibly trapped on the dock. Crews evacuated everyone from the scene and began battling the flames on a 35-foot vessel and a 43-foot vessel moored at a marina there.

Spokane County Fire District 8 welcomes new Fire Chief Lonnie Rash; former leader Tony Nielsen has retired

Fire Chief Lonnie Rash took over the top position at Spokane County Fire District 8 south of Spokane and Spokane Valley with little fanfare last month after longtime Fire Chief Tony Nielsen retired. Nielsen was content to leave without a public sendoff, but those who drive by the district’s headquarters inside Station 82 in Valleyford will notice a tribute to Nielsen – a blue street sign marking the driveway that reads “Nielsen Way.

Body found in submerged Jeep at Seattle marina

Seattle police are investigating after a body was pulled from a submerged Jeep near the Shilshole Bay Marina on Wednesday morning. Crews responded to reports of a vehicle submerged in the water near the 700 block of Seaview Avenue Northwest. A person launching their boat saw the vehicle. When crews arrived, they found a Jeep in the water with a person inside.
