A group of two dozen firefighters, VFW officials, family and friends turned out on a windy, rainy Wednesday afternoon to recognize and honor South County Fire’s own Dave “Bronco” Erickson as he received both the National and the State of Washington VFW award for Firefighter of the Year. VFW Post 8870 Commander Rose Gilliland introduced Erickson and presented the National award certificate.

A sprinkler system inside Elk Creek Apartments kept a fire confined to one apartment before firefighters arrived, said Clallam County Fire District 3 officials. A little before 7 p.m. Monday, firefighters arrived at the complex at 90 S. Rhodefer Road after a tenant reported flames inside an apartment and an adjacent neighbor told of it filling with smoke.

Klickitat County recently adopted a multi-hazard mitigation plan, the first of its kind to be done for the district. The Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires jurisdictions to develop and maintain such plans to remain eligible for certain funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA.

Firefighters are working to put out a barge fire on the Snake River in Burbank on Wednesday. Walla Walla County fire crews were called to the scene about 10:40 a.m. near Grain Terminal Road where the Snake River meets the Columbia River, according to the app PulsePoint, which shows the time and location of 911 calls where fire or medical services are needed.

A Pasco family is displaced after a fire damaged their home, and destroyed their garage and multiple vehicles Tuesday night. A video taken by Kelly Poynor shows firefighters at work as flames were shooting out from the garage just before 9 p.m. “Sounds like they have fireworks or something going on inside,” Poyner can be heard saying in the video.
