Missing Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter likely victim of violent kidnapping, Mexican officials say

A Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter who has been missing for nearly two weeks is likely the victim of a "violent kidnapping," according to the head prosecutor of Baja California, Mexico. Frank Aguilar, 48, was last heard from on the night of Aug. 20, when he went down to check on the condo the family rents out through Airbnb, according to his two daughters.

Study: Alabama rated worst state to work in during the COVID-19 pandemic

Alabama is the worst state in the nation to work in during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a survey out that rates the states based on their policies to protect working families. Oxfam America, a nonprofit agency dedicated to ending poverty, used 27 different data points in three areas of state assistance - worker protections, healthcare protections and unemployment support.

Washington firefighter recovers after Twisp wildfire burned 65% of his body

Right now 75 active, large wildfires are burning across the United States, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Some of the largest fires are in California, Colorado, Arizona, Washington and Oregon with more than 2 million acres burning. Wildland firefighters are among those on the front line, putting their lives in harm’s way to save others and protect property.

Man arrested after series of small arsons in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood

Seattle police are trying to figure out if a 32-year-old man arrested Tuesday night in connection with a series of suspected arsons in the city's Montlake neighborhood might be connected to any other fires in the city. Detectives will be handling the follow-up investigation, a police spokesman told KOMO News on Wednesday.

100 acres burning in southern Spokane County

A 100-acre fire burned about 5 miles northeast of Spangle and about 20 miles south of Spokane Wednesday afternoon, threatening structures, according to the Washington Department of Natural Resources. The Heaton Road wildfire burned through wheat and timber, following its start around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Thomas Kyle-Milward, DNR communications consultant.
