New York: South Buffalo fire evokes memories of 1997 tragedy

VIDEO: The fire believed to have been sparked by illegal fireworks that severely damaged a South Buffalo house Friday offered a pair of grim reminders. One was of the danger of fireworks. The other was of a tragedy that still resonates within the Buffalo Fire Department. “This fire was eerily similar to a fire that took the life of one of our firefighters, Michael Seguin, some 23 years ago,” Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said.

Man rescued after falling down 30 foot embankment in Cowlitz County

Firefighters rescued a man who feel down a 30-foot embankment in Cowlitz County on Sunday, Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue. Firefighters responded to the area of Beacon Hill Drive and Mountain View Drive at 1:30 p.m. A 54-year-old man was walking his dog on the tracks when he slipped and fell down the embankment and called for help, firefighters said.

Crews battle 2-alarm fire at Puyallup elementary school

Crews spent hours battling a two-alarm fire Sunday at a Puyallup elementary school, emergency officials said. Puyallup firefighters initially responded to the scene, Karshner Elementary at 15th Street NW and 8th Avenue NW, at around 11 a.m. after receiving an alert from an automatic fire alarm. When crews arrived, they found black smoke and flames erupting from the school.

Brush fire along eastbound I-90 near Kittitas Co. caused blocked road, authorities say

All lanes of eastbound I-90 near Kittitas County were blocked for several hours Saturday due to a brush fire sweeping the south side of the road. Around 1p.m. Saturday, Troopers responded to a brush fire along the south side of I-90 near milepost 131, Kittitas County and 5 miles west of Vantage. Trooper John Bryant said in a Tweet early Saturday afternoon that roads are currently blocked due to heavy smoke over the roadway.

Volunteer burnout a problem for fire district, according to South Whidbey chief

Availability of firefighters has become a critical need for South Whidbey Fire/EMS staff, according to fire district officials. To meet needs, the fire district is asking voters to approve a levy lid lift of 30 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value during the August primary. If approved, the lid lift would increase from 65 to 95 cents and go into effect in spring 2021.
