In her 21 years with the Auburn Fire Department and Valley Regional Fire Authority, Janeen Ruge, Auburn’s first female firefighter, delivered at least five babies and calmed many frightened patients.
As a certified member of VRFA’s Technical Rescue Team, she plucked imperiled people from fast-moving waters, handled hazardous materials, and helped with structural collapses and rope rescues.

Residents of Clark County can use fireworks to celebrate Independence Day in unincorporated parts of the county from 9 a.m. to midnight on July 4.
“Even though fireworks are offered for sale starting on June 28, remember that they are not allowed to be used until July 4,” Interim Fire Marshal Dan Young said in a news release.

Four outbuildings were lost in a fire up Nahahum Canyon in Cashmere Wednesday.
Chelan County Fire District 6 Chief Phil Mosher says when crews arrived, a fairly large structure was fully involved in flames.
“That extended to a pumphouse, and another shed, and another good-sized outbuilding. It then spread in the tall grass a little ways, but we were able to corral that.

Things are good at San Juan Island Fire and Rescue, according to Chief Norvin Collins, and he said he’s interested in seeing what life will be like for emergency services post-COVID-19.
“Things were fine before — doing all-hazard, getting out and taking care of the community,” Collins, a firefighter with three decades of experience, said.

The Union for the Kansas City Fire Department says they are already short 60 firefighters. Cutting 4.5% of the department budget would mean close to $9 million. That would have dangerous impacts on public safety.
“I believe that fire department cuts and public safety cuts should be the last to be made,” to International Association of Firefighters local 42 President Tim Dupin said.
