As the world continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of focus has been on the health risks to healthcare workers due to the infectiousness of the virus and the insufficient amount of personal protective equipment (PPE) available. However, another health risk to these providers that is just starting to get attention are the physical and mental health effects from their constant exposure to the trauma of this disaster.

Firefighters discovered a body after putting out a fire Wednesday at a home in Kitsap County. Fire crews were called just before 2:00 p.m. after someone in the area saw the smoke in the 11000 block of Schold Road in Silverdale. Firefighters quickly put out the fire but found a body inside. Investigators are looking into what may have caused the fire.

Bail was set at $50,000 Monday for a man accused of starting a fire in downtown Olympia, Thurston County Superior Court records show. The court found probable cause to charge Nathan Ray Cicco, 19, with first-degree arson. Cicco has no known address, according to court records. Arraignment is set for June 2.

Ron Simmons is planning to call it a day soon. He’s been Snohomish Fire’s chief the past seven years, but that’s just one-fifth of his 35-year career at the department. His first day was Nov. 11, 1985. He’s decided his last will be June 31. Fire District 4 won’t be selecting the new chief until as late as June, but its board began discussing the position this week after press time.

Since the first coronavirus case was confirmed in the United States on Jan. 21, over one million people in the U.S. have confirmed cases of COVID-19. On April 12, the U.S. became the nation with the most deaths globally, but there are early signs that the U.S. case and death counts may be leveling off, as the growth of new cases and deaths plateaus.
