Fire chars 10,000 acres, damages buildings in Douglas County

A fire that charred 10,000 acres of grass, sage and wheat was stopped about three miles short of town but continued to burn as of Monday afternoon. The Road 11 Fire began about 12:50 p.m. Saturday, July 11. It burned west of Highway 172, near Road 11, and moved northward, then east toward Mansfield, according to Southeast Washington Interagency Team 3.

8 aircraft, 100 firefighters stop Sunset Fire in Chelan County

Eight aircraft and roughly 100 firefighters contained a wildfire Monday that had the potential to threaten hundreds of homes in Sunnyslope. The Sunset Fire was reported at noon Monday near Sunset Drive and Easy Street. Officials called for a third-alarm response at 12:42 p.m. as the fire spread west toward Monitor and to the east toward Warm Springs Canyon and the Eaglerock Drive subdivision.

Georgia firefighter injured in blaze says she knew her fellow firefighters would rescue her

VIDEO: Firefighters are trained to rescue people from burning buildings, and they do it without hesitation. It's much more personal when it's one of their own. Dekalb County firefighter Viv Evans was battling a blaze in Stone Mountain when she got injured. Evans says even while flames were swirling around her, she knew without a doubt her fellow firefighters would get her out.

Official: Firefighting system was inoperable on Navy ship docked in San Diego

A fire suppression system was inoperable when a blaze erupted aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego, so sailors fought the blaze with water, a top Navy official said Monday. Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck said the Halon gas system had been turned off because it was being worked on while the amphibious assault ship was undergoing maintenance work.

Window washer rescued from high-rise building in Florida

VIDEO: A tense rescue unfolded on Monday morning at a high-rise building in North Palm Beach. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Derek Wiley said rescuers were dispatched to a 23-story building in the 100 block of Lakeshore Drive about 10 a.m. Wiley said a window washer was hanging from the 15th floor of the building, yelling for help.
