NIST Study: Wear and tear may cause firefighter gear to release more 'forever chemicals'

Last year, a study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) showed that the textiles used in protective clothing worn by firefighters often contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, a class of chemicals that has been linked to an increased risk of cancer and other health effects.

Pierce County fire truck ransacked of nearly $10K worth of equipment at Tacoma grocery store

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Firefighters who serve the Pierce County communities of Browns Point and Dash Point are without several of their life-saving tools after thieves picked through a fire engine while it was parked at a grocery store on Monday. Citizens ran into the QFC store on 49th Ave NE to tell the firefighters someone was rummaging through their engine while they were inside.

Multiple dumpster fires set across Seattle's Capitol Hill

Seattle Fire responded to a series of fires set across Capitol Hill overnight. According to emergency radio updates, crews handled multiple fires set to dumpsters and recycling receptacles including a large fire that broke out near a building in the 1600 block of 15th Ave early Tuesday morning. SFD also responded to another significant 15th Ave dumpster fire and smaller trash fires including one reported near 12th and Pine.

Vancouver fire truck stolen; wanted man arrested in Oregon

Police are investigating the suspect accused of stealing a Vancouver fire truck on Monday night. The Vancouver Police Department responded to the report at West Mill Plain Boulevard and Kauffman Avenue around 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 15. Officers were told the Squad 1 Dodge 5500 truck had been nabbed as paramedics treated a patient near the scene.

Spokane Valley firefighters tackle massive flames at dump fire in single digit temperatures

Spokane Valley Fire Department fought a fire at Sunshine Disposal on Tuesday morning. Callers to 9-1-1 reported 30-foot-high flames and that the entire garbage pile was on fire. Firefighters fought the flames in single degree temperatures with wind chill temperatures being below zero. Firefighters say the bitter cold provided challenges when battling the fire.
