One of the most important tools for the Mount Vernon fire department is now half a century old. "You can see the scratches and marks on it. The once really bright red paint is more of an orange color now. It's faded over the past 50 years. But overall, it's still an excellent running truck," said Chief Brad DeLay, Mount Vernon Volunteer Fire Protection District.

With the elimination of their positions finalized earlier this week, firefighters are asking the city to negotiate on the change to public safety officers. Scott Dix, president of Cedar Falls Firefighters Local 1366, made the request to begin formal union negotiations in a letter sent to the city Wednesday.

A driver who crashed into a guardrail in Stevens County had to be airlifted from the scene Thursday afternoon. According to Stevens County Fire District 1, a suspected medical event caused the driver to crash directly into a guardrail on Highway 292 just west of Shores Acres Road. Approximately 6-8 feet of guardrail ended up in the passenger compartment, trapping the victim inside.

People calling 911 in Pierce County might face some extra questions from dispatchers about coronavirus symptoms. Starting Thursday, Sound Sound 911 dispatchers have started asking those who call for medical aid if they’re experiencing any coughs, fevers or shortness of breath. It’s an additional precaution to protect first responders and the people they help, said South Sound 911 spokesperson Kris McNamar.

A person has been found dead inside a car that exploded and erupted into flames Thursday morning in a Woodinville parking lot. Firefighters and deputies responded to the scene, in the 15500 block of Woodinville Redmond Road NE, at about 10:10 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle explosion and fire.
