Oak Brook’s police and fire chiefs explained Tuesday that the village’s daytime population doesn’t directly impact their determinations of staffing needs, comments that came after a preliminary report from a village committee questioned the number that has been used for several years.
The report, from Oak Brook’s Long-Term Strategic Planning Advisory Committee, contends that village staffing levels may be based on a mistaken daytime population that has been greatly overstated.

Berkeley County’s sheriff says a man who was a junior at Macedonia High School has been charged in the burning of the school 23 years after the night it burned down.
Daniel Scott Harris, 40, is charged with second-degree arson and second-degree burglary, Sheriff Duane Lewis said. Harris was arrested Tuesday night.

A memorial service for Cowlitz 2 Battalion Chief Mike Zainfeld will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at at New Life Fellowship Church at 2441 42 Ave. in Longview, according to a Cowlitz 2 press release issued Tuesday.
Zainfeld, a 25-year veteran of Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue, took his own life on Sept. 19 after battling a job-related injury incurred by occupational stress, according to the agency.

Yakima Air Terminal will be getting one million dollars from the Federal Aviation Administration's, airport improvement program.
This money will go towards a new aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle.
"This piece of equipment is specifically required to respond within three minutes of any type of aircraft accident, " said Robert Peterson, airport director for Yakima Air Terminal.

The best kind of training is training that most closely mirrors real life circumstances.
The Yakima and West Valley Fire Departments are looking forward to unique training opportunities later this year in light of school demolitions scheduled for the West Valley School District.
Apple Valley and Summitview elementary school buildings are coming down later this fall to make room for new schools which will give the firefighters a couple of months and a couple of big building in which to practice.
