West Thurston Regional Fire Authority Chief warns of firefighter layoffs, station closures if property tax levy fails

The chief of the West Thurston Regional Fire Authority says more than a dozen career firefighter positions could be cut and two of the department's four full-time fire stations could close if a maintenance and operations levy proposal fails in the up-coming primary election. Property owner Jim Elsner supports the levy.

Brush fire burns about 40 acres west of Moses Lake

A brush fire burned about 40 acres Tuesday afternoon on Bureau of Land Management property west of Moses Lake. The fire was first reported about 2:30 p.m. along North Frontage Road, near Hiawatha Road and Road A Northeast, about 10 miles west of Moses Lake. Grant County Fire District 5 Capt. Travis Svilar said a total of about 15 fire trucks were on scene to contain the blaze.

Cowlitz 2 fire stations will accelerate fire response times

Frames and piping are going up at a pair of bond-funded fire stations that Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue plans to have operational by early 2020, and the agency is hoping to bring back some features earlier considered too costly. The new stations at Baker’s Corner in West Longview and along West Side Highway in Lexington are part of a voter-approved $11 million improvement project, which includes purchase of a new fire engine and equipment for the stations.

Fire Department and Tomah (WI) Ambulance Service to Share Building

 
 
The architectural firm Keller from Appleton is drafting a building design to get some rough numbers for the cost, and it should be brought before the city council in August, Adler said.  

The idea to merge has been simmering since June 2018, when Tomah’s mayor Mike Murray vetoed the Tomah City Council’s decision to construct a new $2.9 million TAAS facility on the new Tomah Health campus, Adler said.  

Murray was concerned by the addition of four minutes to the response time to areas of the city north of the railroad tracks. The new hospital is two miles south of the existing ambulance facility.
