Massachusetts firefighter invents device that could keep fellow firefighters safe from hidden danger

When there’s no one else to help, firefighters are the people who answer the call. “Water’s pouring into your basement, water’s pouring out of your ceiling, something’s smoky, something’s on fire, you saw a spark, you don’t know what to do, they call us,” said firefighter John Callahan. “We’re not only firefighters.

'It just really wiped it out!': Wrong-way driver sends semi crashing into Spanaway home

PHOTO: Luckily no one was seriously injured when a wrong-way driver sent a semi into a Spanaway home Friday morning, narrowly missing a sleeping couple. It was around 3 a.m. when a pickup driver was heading the wrong way on Spanaway Loop Road and approached a northbound semi, according to Det. Sgt. Gary Sanders with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

Camas-Washougal Fire Department's James Tierney Promoted to Fire Captain/Paramedic

Firefighter/Paramedic James Tierney, a 10-year veteran of Camas-Washougal Fire Department has been promoted to the rank of Fire Captain/Paramedic. Congratulations, Captain Tierney! Tierney was hired March 2, 2009, and has been serving as a Field Training Officer, also in charge of the fitness equipment.

Cause of Battle Ground February barn fire undetermined

The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office was unable to determine the exact cause of a February fire that destroyed a barn in Battle Ground. Assistant Fire Marshal Curtis Eavenson ruled the cause of the Feb. 7 fire at 23019 N.E. 182nd Ave., as undetermined. But a space heater used in the building likely played a part, he said.

Spokane County (WA) Invests $50K in Fire Apparatus Purchase

 
 

The district hasn’t owned a ladder truck of any kind before, but the purchase was necessary to maintain the district’s fire insurance rating, said Fire Chief Randy Johnson. “It’s a good addition to the capacity of the district,” he said.  

The 1995 Simon Duplex truck was purchased from the Yakima Fire Department for $50,000. It has a platform on the end of a 102-foot ladder where firefighters can stand and direct water on a fire below. Captain Megan Hill joked that it was a “one owner, low miles” purchase. Despite its age, it has just under 40,000 miles on it and still has plenty of life, Hill said.
