12-year-old Californian Develops Fire Detection System That Wins Her $25,000 and Top Junior Scientist Award

A 12-year-old girl from Miller Middle School in San Jose has won $25,000 in a science fair for her invention of a new fire detection system that’s faster, cheaper, and more reliable than smoke detectors. The Thermo Fischer Junior Innovator’s Challenge claims to be the nation’s premier STEM contest for middle schoolers, and Shanya Gill won over second and third-place inventions of a smartphone app that can detect certain cancers and an experimental method of generating electricity through plant cells.

1 with minor injuries after SUV crashes into a home in North Spokane

PHOTO: Six residents in North Spokane had a car drive through the front of their home. On Nov. 16 around 8:30 a.m., the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) were dispatched to a technical rescue at a home near 2800 North Wellesley Avenue. As crews arrived, they saw that an SUV had driven through a fence and into the front of the home.

Wenatchee alum turned Kirkland firefighter Tyler Farrar enjoys life after pro-cycling

I’ll never forget the morning of the 4th of July in 2011. My son was 3 ½ months old and we are about to take him down to a neighborhood 4th of July mini-parade. My phone starts to vibrate with text messages with the exciting news that Wenatchee’s Tyler Farrar has just won a sprint stage - Stage 3 in the Tour de France! - on the 4th of July! No American sprinter has won a sprint stage at the Tour de France since.
