Six people trapped in their apartments were rescued by firefighters from a burning three-story building Sunday afternoon in a fire that required “a massive effort” by the entire force of 88 firefighters on duty. Firefighters prevented a fire in Gales Addition from spreading to a home that was about 5 feet from a fully engulfed outbuilding Sunday. When firefighters from Clallam County Fire District No. 2 arrived at the fire on the 2300 block of East Fifth Avenue east of Port Angeles at about 2 p.m. Sunday, they saw flames and smoke shooting out of a recreational vehicle and a nearby outbuilding, Assistant Chief Dan Huff said.

A firefighter was injured Friday while fighting the 700-acre Miriam Fire burning near White Pass. Fire management officials reported that the injured firefighter was airlifted to a local hospital, but further details and his status were unknown Friday evening. The lightning-sparked fire nearly tripled in size Wednesday and Thursday and is zero percent contained.

The Chehalis Fire Department’s station was evacuated Friday and remains vacated after asbestos was found while workers removed floor tiles as part of an ongoing renovation process. Per state Department of Labor and Industries Regulations, the fire department cannot use the station until it’s deemed clean by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor.
