Benton County homeowner starts 20+ acre fire trying to kill gophers with torch

A homeowner started a grass fire that threatened homes while trying to kill gophers with a propane torch, Benton County fire officials said Wednesday. The fire damaged a home and threatened several others East Badger Road southwest of Kennewick. One trailer near the damaged home also caught fire. Officials said it burned between 20 and 25 acres of grassland, causing upward of $25,000 in damage.

Kittias County: Over a dozen firefighters put out blazing barn fire

Over in Kittias County, a fire left a local's barn in flames. Kittitas County Fire District 1 was dispatched to a report of a barn fire on Sisters Road in Thorp at 7:07 p.m. Tuesday. 15 firefighters were able to put out the fire within an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Kittitas County Fire Marshal, and they are still determining the total cost in damages.

Grant Awarded to CC Camp VFD (NC)

The check will be mailed to Fire Chief Lanny Whitaker to be used by the department to purchase needed equipment. The equipment is purchased using matching funds and must be approved by the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal.

New Boardman Township (OH) Fire Station Opens Ahead of Schedule

The celebratory ribbon cutting in front of a packed Fire Station 71 happened Tuesday afternoon.  

This new location offers several perks for Boardman firefighters.

The 18,000-foot building cost around $3.6 million and has a lot to offer in terms of space, a training facility and several offices -- all under one roof.

"The location is great, you know?" Chief Mark Pitzer said. "Being on a main thoroughfare actually allows us to get to every part of the community within minutes. We can get north, south, east and west pretty rapidly. This also helps us improve our response times to the south end of the township as well."
