New Yakima Fire Chief Starts Job June 1

Yakima has a new fire chief and he's from the Yakima Fire Department. The city has officially named Aaron Markham the new chief. Markham will start his new job on June 1. He'll soon move from his office where he served as a deputy fire chief for the Yakima Fire Department. In a news release from the city Yakima City Manager Cliff Moore says “Aaron has many years of experience in the fire service in a variety of roles.

Spokane Fire Department debuts clinical checklists to improve patient care

Spokane Fire Department paramedics now have a new life-saving tool at their fingertips. The department just debuted new clinical checklists in hopes of saving time and cutting down on mistakes on medical calls. Fire chief Brian Schaeffer said it's taken the department a year of research and training to get the checklists in its paramedics' hands.

Vancouver Fire Department reviews efforts to address gender bias

After a 2016 investigation revealed gender bias and cultural problems within the Vancouver Fire Department, Chief Joe Molina had this to say: “We have to get better.” Now, 17 months later, the chief points to improvements made in the wake of the report: • Stations were changed in ways the chief says better accommodates men and women working together.

New $1.25M fire truck unveiled in Johns Creek

It is 59 feet long and weighs more than 68,000 pounds. The truck is equipped with driver seats in the front and rear, making it easy to maneuver.

The truck also features an aerial ladder which has a 100-foot vertical reach.

This is the second vehicle the fire department has added this year. In February, a 32-foot long custom “Pierce Enforcer” pumper, which costs $563,656, was added to the fleet.

Tesla in Autopilot mode sped up before crashing | KSL.com

Data from the Model S electric vehicle show it picked up speed for 3.5 seconds before crashing into the firetruck in suburban Salt Lake City, the report said. The driver manually hit the brakes a fraction of a second before impact.

Police suggested that the car was following another vehicle and dropped its speed to 55 mph (89 kph) to match the leading vehicle. They say the leading vehicle then likely changed lanes and the Tesla automatically sped up to its preset speed of 60 mph (97 kph) without noticing the stopped cars ahead.
