Accused Spokane firefighters push back on bullying allegations

An investigation into complaints of bullying and sexual harassment at Spokane Fire Department Station 2 found five officials violated city policies. Yet the investigation is being criticized as one-sided and thus, incomplete, by those named in the report and the union that represents them. The city’s Human Resources Department issued a report April 27 following a two-month-long investigation that named Battalion Chiefs Don Waller and Darin Neiwert, and Lts.

No serious injuries amid fires near Selah

While a brush fire scorched roughly 300 acres Tuesday afternoon, threatening at least seven homes on the 500 block of Lucas Road, a nearby tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 82 closed part of the highway for hours and backed up traffic for several miles. The cause of the brush fire — which was still burning late Tuesday — is under investigation, said Michael Daniels, deputy to the garrison commander at the Yakima Training Center.

'Low-frequency, high-risk': Longview firefighters practice rope rescues

Rope rescues are rare for Longview firefighters. But that doesn’t stop the department’s rope rescue team from constantly honing its skills. “It’s a low-frequency, high-risk event,” Battalion Chief Troy Buzalsky said Tuesday. Buzalsky was standing at the bottom of an eight-story staircase at Campus Towers near Lower Columbia College.
