Defunct Onley (VA) Volunteer Fire-Rescue Sells Fire Apparatus

The truck was sold after a Facebook post about it went up on the organization’s page.

In July 2016, Onley Volunteer Fire-Rescue told News 3 of their financial struggles.

Chief Christopher Davis said staffing and revenues not matching expenses were the primary reasons for the closure. The revenue shortfall was due to the department serving a largely uninsured population. The staffing issues were because many of the volunteers worked regular jobs, making it difficult to maintain full coverage.

Caribou (ME) Students Help Restore Antique Fire Apparatus

Firefighter Scott Michaud said that the department two years ago re-acquired the truck, which had been purchased brand-new in 1945. Since then, firefighters have been searching for a way to restore the vintage vehicle back to its former glory.

Parts required to get the fire truck running were often difficult to find or out of production. But the students were able to improvise. When they couldn’t find a gasket, for example, they made their own in the shop.

REV Group Fire Division Introduces Axis Smart Truck Technology for the Fire Service

REV Group

REV Group (NYSE: REVG), a $2.3 billion manufacturer of industry-leading specialty vehicle brands, is proud to announce the new AXIS™ Smart Truck Technology, a secure revolutionary system that is engineered specifically for the fire service. Additionally, it enables superior electronics troubleshooting and support through real-time notifications, run-log recording, remote diagnostics and secure over-the-air device updates.

The AXISTM Smart Truck Technology provides:

  • Access from any computer, laptop or mobile device to vehicle information through a web based dashboard
  • Important truck information at a glance with the ability to delve further into specific truck data and diagnostics
  • Monitoring of up to 5 vehicle networks
  • Remote updates to multiple components and faster support from the dealer and OEM when service is needed
  • Real time vehicle notification via text and email to mobile devices
  • An open architecture design allowing for the adoption of additional technology partners to further improve fire ground operations and more

Having trucks in service is critical to mission success, and driving increased operational readiness is foundational to E-ONE, Ferrara, and KME customer support. As Jay Johnson, Vice President of Product Management, Marketing, & After-Market at REV Group’s Fire Division states, “This revolutionary technology sets the stage for unmatched customer support while establishing our fire apparatus as the unparalleled Internet of Things (IoT) hub for the future fire ground.”

Commercial Truck Equipment Corporation Announces Five-Year Agreement with Ontario, Canada’s City of Mississauga

APPLETON, WI—Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK) company, announced that the City of Mississauga, Ontario has established a five-year, renewable and extendable agreement with Commercial Truck Equipment Corporation (Commercial). The City of Mississauga’s initial apparatus order includes seven Pierce pumper trucks and four Pierce aerial apparatus to support the needs of the community’s first responders. This contract is the first major supply agreement since Commercial expanded its Pierce territory to include the province of Ontario.

“We are honored and thrilled to be selected by the City of Mississauga for an order of such scale and complexity,” said Morgan MacKay, general manager of Commercial’s emergency division. “Through our partnership with Pierce Manufacturing, we look forward to providing Mississauga’s Fire and Emergency Services with customized, state-of-the-art apparatus that will exceed critical demands for many years ahead.”

Mississauga is Canada’s sixth largest city with the fire and emergency services providing aid to more than 700,000 residents from 20 active fire stations, with one additional station currently under construction. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario and bordering Toronto, Mississauga is one of the most populous suburbs in the world, and home to a thriving business district and Canada’s busiest airport.

“One of our municipality’s main priorities is to support the needs of our community’s first responders,” said Mississauga Assistant Fire Chief, Jamie Zimmerman. “The agreement we have established with Commercial Truck Equipment Corporation and Pierce Manufacturing will allow us to put the necessary apparatus into service to support response needs and amplify capabilities.”

Commercial’s emergency equipment division is an exclusive Pierce dealer for Western Canada, Ontario, and the Northern Territories. Founded in 1947, Commercial is Canada’s largest truck equipment company. The organization offers five fire apparatus service facilities in Canada, focusing on sales, parts, service and customer support.

The custom apparatus included in the city of Mississauga’s initial order will feature six pumpers and one rescue pumper – all built on the Pierce Enforcer custom chassis. The four aerial apparatus included in the order are two 100’ aerial platforms, a 75’ quint, and a 107’ Ascendant tandem rear axle ladder.
