Thirty-five teens from across Snohomish County are getting the rare opportunity to spend this week immersing themselves (often literally) in the world of firefighting, thanks to South Snohomish Fire’s annual Kids Fire Camp program. Administered through Lynnwood Parks and Recreation, the camp itself is run and staffed by South County fire fighters, all of whom volunteer their time without pay to help mentor kids while introducing them to some of the special skills that firefighters use every day on the job.

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a mobile home Tuesday outside Bainbridge Manufacturing, a Waterville business that builds plastic cabinetry hardware. The fire was reported at 5:09 p.m. in the 200 block of West Third Street, and the mobile home was fully involved when firefighters arrived, said Douglas County Fire District 1 Chief Dale Jordan.

The Spokane Fire Department announced Wednesday the appointment of Megan Phillips as the new City of Spokane Fire Marshal. The fire marshal position became vacant after Fire Marshal Michael Miller retired in June. Phillips previously served as the assistant fire marshal. As fire marshal, Phillips leads the prevention division, which includes code enforcement, plans review, and community risk reduction.

Selectmen said a 49 percent raise for Fire Chief Fred Mitchell Jr. is justified because the town "got a great deal" and "a bargain" when it hired him three years ago. Mitchell, 51, a Rhode Island native, was hired in October 2015 at $63,359 with a contract that boosted his pay annually at 3 percent per year.

Many residents of Sullivan County are in mourning following the unexpected death of a long-time community leader. Clay Shidler, chief of the Hymera-Jackson Township Fire Department, died Monday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital after crashing his vehicle in northeastern Sullivan County. Shidler, 60, of Hymera, was a 31-year member of the fire department and volunteered for many community organizations.
