The 8,200-square-foot facility cost nearly $2 million and includes living space, a large kitchen, fitness equipment, a meeting room and separate sleeping quarters for men and women. It replaces the station on South Island Road, which was plagued by overcrowding, mold and leaks.
The station is adjacent to the former Eagle Electric facility north of Pennyroyal Road. In 2009, the city purchased the land for $1 million with the intention to use the site for a new fire station. After years of planning, crews broke ground on the project last spring, and construction started in July.
