Jeanette Woldseth, Washington’s first female firefighter, was a self-effacing pioneer

Capt. Jeanette Woldseth thought of herself as just a firefighter. She didn’t want to be remembered as a female firefighter, even though she was the first in the state. She also didn’t want the attention or focus on her, even when cancer consumed her body. Yet, it’s clear part of Capt. Woldseth’s legacy is that she paved the way for other women to not only join the firefighting ranks, but to succeed in the male-dominated profession.

Prosper (TX) Fire Department 2016 Pierce Impel 1,500/750 PUC Pumper

Photos and Description by Lindsay Dye

Engine 2 began service with the Prosper (TX) Fire Rescue in October 2016, along with new Station 2’s opening. A twin to this unit was placed into service at Station 1 shortly afterward.

The cab/chassis is a Pierce Impel with seating for five and two rear-facing EMS cabinets—one installed on the left wall of the cab and one on the right cab wall. The apparatus is constructed of standard aluminum with full-depth compartments and AMDOR roll-up doors. Rescue style compartments are located on top of the hose body. SCBA storage is located adjacent to both rear wheel wells.

Power is provided by a Cummins ISL9 450-hp engine and an Allison 3000 EVS five-speed transmission with push button controls. The TAK-4 independent front suspension system is featured as is the Pierce Command Zone advanced control system with WiFi. A Harrison 6-kW hydraulic generator (Hotshift PTO) and electronic control is located in a cargo area at the front of the hose body on the right side.

The apparatus has a Pierce single-stage, midship 1,500-gpm pump with pump-and-roll capability. The tank is a 750-gallon polypropylene tank with a 30-gallon foam cell. Foam capability is provided by Husky 3 system and a Hercules 140 CAFS. Foam is plumbed to the front jump line, the lower crosslays, the booster reel, and the right rear discharge.

The hosebed carries 1,000 feet of five-inch LDH, a 300-foot attack lay of 2½-inch hose connected to a gated wye with 150 feet of 1¾-inch hose connected to the wye. Three hundred of three-inch hose is for use with the Blitzfire monitor. The front bumper tray carries 100 feet of 1¾-inch hose connected to a 1½-inch discharge on the left center of the bumper. Crosslays (two with 200 feet each of 1¾-inch hose) and a 200-foot dead lay are located in a semienclosed compartment in front of the pump panel. A booster reel with 100 feet of one-inch hose is located in the rear tailboard compartment. A Task Force Tips Hurricane monitor (Model XFIH-E with panel and remote control) with a TFT Master Stream 1,250-gpm nozzle (Model M-ER) is mounted on top of the pump panel. Duo-Safety ladders (Model 900A 24-foot, two-section, Model 775A 14-foot roof, and Model 585A 10-foot folding) are stored in a tunnel on the upper left rear of the apparatus. A Little Giant Classic Model 13 ladder is stored in the right front body compartment.

Warning lights include a Whelen Freedom IV-Q LED Lightbar (81-inch) and Whelen M6 LED lights on the apparatus body. Scene lighting is provided by Whelen Pioneer PFP1 lights mounted on the body sides and on the brow. A Will-Burt Night Scan 2 light tower is mounted on the cab roof. Audio warning devices include a pedestal mounted Federal Q2B siren mounted on the left bumper area and a Whelen Model 295HFS3 electronic siren module connected to two Whelen SA314A 100 watt speakers mounted through the front bumper. A traditional fire bell is mounted on the right front bumper area.

Wildland Firefighters See Latest Wildland Equipment

By Alan M. Petrillo

Approximately 250 wildland firefighters, chief officers, incident commanders, and others had an opportunity to see the latest developments in wildland equipment, tools and gear at the recent Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) conference in Reno, Nevada.

WATERAX had its Mark 3 wildland portable fire pump on display, a 58-pound four-stage unit powered by a WATERAX 10-horsepower gasoline engine with a two-inch suction intake, and 1½-inch-inch discharge that puts out a maximum of 105 gallons per minute (gpm) at 380 pounds per square inch (psi). "This is a portable pump that can be handled by one firefighter," says Mario Janson, WATERAX's domestic sales manager. "It's a great pump that's able to push water long distances, which often is needed in wildland firefighting."

Raffaele Gerbasi, WATERAX's president, says the Rancher® series unit WATERAX displayed has a Mini-Striker® WATERAX pump powered by a Honda GXH50 four-stroke gasoline engine with a 65-gallon water tank that puts out 80 gpm at 85 psi through a ¾-inch hoseline on a manual reel. Gerbasi says that the Rancher also is available with a 125-gallon water tank, and that the unit, fitted on a skid, can easily slide onto the back of a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) or the bed of a pickup truck.

Rick Isaacks, municipal foam sales manager for North America at Johnson Controls, which owns Chemguard, says the two most popular foams it makes are the Silv-ex-Plus, and the DirectAttack foam agent. "DirectAttack foam agent fire suppression concentrate is designed specifically for use on Class A fuel fires, including wood, paper, coal, structure, and rubber fires," Isaacks points out. "The foam agent gives the firefighter suppression capabilities, exposure protection, and increased safety. And, it can be effective on some Class B flammable liquid fires when applied by medium- and high-expansion devices."

Isaacks says that Silv-ex Plus is a low-, medium-, and high-expansion Class A foam concentrate formulated from specialty hydrocarbon surfactants, stabilizers, corrosion inhibitors, and solvents. "The latest development in this original forest fire control concentrate is that Silv-ex Plus has been proven effective on deep-seated Class A fires such as tire, paper, coal, structure, and wildfires," he says.

PHOS-CHeK displayed several of its products for wildland and structural firefighting, including its Flash 21 fuel gelling agent, its WD881 Class A foam concentrate, ground-applied Long-Term Retardant for wildland use, First Response Class A foam concentrate and wetting agent to make water more effective for firefighting, PHOS-CHeK Insul-8 structural fire protection liquid gel, and the PHOS-CHeK Solid Class A Foam Stick.

FireStopper USA makes the AB40002 FFC all-purpose firefighting foam concentrate designed to extinguish any class fire quickly, according to Philip Held, national sales manager. The catalyst is a high kinetic catalytic foaming agent, he notes, that can be used on structure fires, hydrocarbon fuels, transformer fires, wildland fires when applied from the air or the ground, or class D magnesium aluminum and titanium fires.

Scotty Firefighter, displayed its wildland foam nozzle, as well as its 4010 Fast-Foam applicator for wildland use. "The Fast-Foam applicator uses PHOS-CHeK Solid Class A Foam Sticks," says Lloyd Rees, sales and support for Scotty. "A firefighter can flow from 15 to 95 gpm from the Fast-Foam nozzle, and
