Fire burns portable classroom at Gig Harbor elementary school

A fire heavily damaged two classrooms inside an exterior building at Gig Harbor's Harbor Heights Elementary School Wednesday. Firefighters were called to the school around 3:30 p.m. for reports of the fire and found flames coming out of one of the portable classroom buildings. They were able to keep the flames from spreading beyond the portable, Gig Harbor Fire officials said.

Spokane man jailed for trying to burn neighbor's house down, setting booby traps

A Spokane man has been arrested on arson and harassment charges after he tried to burn down a neighbor's home According to probable cause documents, police were called to a house on N. Crestline Monday night by a woman who said her son was mentally unstable and had booby trapped the house, and possibly made other weapons.

Investigators to start searching for cause of raging S. Seattle barge fire

Investigators will start looking for clues Wednesday as they try to figure out what sparked a raging barge fire in South Seattle. Firefighters battled the huge blaze on the Duwamish River after it broke out about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of South Myrtle Street, just off East Marginal Way South.

Some Seattle firefighters to wear bulletproof vests for extra safety

The Seattle Fire Department said their new policy to double staffing on blocks home to some of the city’s busiest homeless shelters will continue until fire crews feel safe again doing their jobs. Asst. Chief Bryan Hastings said firefighters have been assaulted, swarmed by unruly crowds even had people steal gear from their engines and aid cars while they have been working on patients in and around Pioneer Square.

For South Whatcom Fire, it's all fun and games until somebody's air pack runs out

The "Five D's" of dodgeball, according to "the great" Patches O'Houlihan in the movie "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," are: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge. "If you master these," O'Houilhan proclaimed during a training session in the movie, "no amount of balls on earth can hit you." South Whatcom Fire Authority would like to add a sixth "D" to that list, and it might just save a firefighter's life.
