These firefighters face a different kind of battle: Immigration

All they want to do is to keep fighting fires on millions of acres of private, state and tribal-owned forestlands as part of Washington state's largest on-call fire department. But the firefighting fates of Noe Vazquez and Christian Garcia Herrera, who have each fought more than 20 fires, are in limbo until the federal government reaches a deal on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, otherwise known as DACA.

New Haven, Conn. firefighters’ union sues state union after relationship breakdown

The city firefighters’ union, Local 825, filed a four-count lawsuit alleging a breach of fiduciary duty against the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut, a union which represents the state’s fire departments. “Have you ever had anyone demand money from you? It happens all the time: spam emails, unsolicited phone calls and junk mail,” said Frank Ricci, a battalion chief and president of Local 825.

California firefighting Girls' Empowerment Camp reinstated, expanded a week after it was canceled

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has directed the reinstatement of the city’s Girls’ Empowerment Camp, an event that had been canceled last week after an attorney questioned whether its gender-focused approach violated state and federal anti-discrimination statutes. The event will be expanded to two weekends — one in April and one in May -- and registration will be reopened.

Alabama volunteer fire department burglarized; trucks stolen, abandoned

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating after the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Department, not far from the Tuscaloosa-Fayette County Line, was burglarized early Tuesday morning. The Mayfield Fire Chief says not only was the station burglarized, but two fire trucks were stolen, then run off the road and abandoned.

New York firefighters charged in epic wedding party brawl

A group of Long Island firefighters landed in hot water for a massive brawl at a wedding party that left the groom injured, police said. The melee erupted Saturday between attendees at a Hagerman Fire Department dinner and wedding party guests in the foyer of the East Wind Hotel in Wading River, NY, Riverhead town police said.
