In next major emergency, California county's leaders say they’ll send mass cellphone warnings

Sonoma County’s top elected and administrative leaders all agree if another major disaster struck the region today, one key aspect of their response would be different than when the historic wildfires ignited five months ago: They’d use mass cellphone alerts to warn the public about the emergency. And if rainfall from this latest storm triggered dangerous debris flows in the county’s fire-scarred hillsides, a team of designated staff members would immediately jump into action.

One dead in Raymond house fire

One person was found dead early Monday after firefighters extinguished a blaze at 623 Duryea St. in Raymond. According to a statement from the Raymond Fire Department, firefighters responded to a structure fire just before midnight Sunday and found it fully involved when they arrived and threatening a neighboring home.

Bellingham Fire responds to fire at Juvenile Detention Center

Bellingham Fire crews responded to an appliance fire at the Whatcom County Juvenile Detention Center at 4:55 p.m. Monday. No injuries were reported, according to Assistant Fire Chief Bill Hewett, and the facility did not need to be evacuated. “They were able to move some of the kids around in the center to safe areas, and we weren’t required to do a full evacuation,” Hewett said.
