9 Investigates: Fire rescue vehicles recalled and still on the road

ORLANDO, Fla. - An Orange County rescue vehicle caught on fire as firefighters were transporting a child to the hospital. An investigation revealed the engine's water pump had failed. Read: More than 440,000 Dodge Ram trucks recalled due to fire hazard The truck's cab was part of a nationwide recall because the water pumps could catch on fire.

The truck’s cab was part of a nationwide recall because the water pumps could catch on fire. Firefighters contacted us when they said they were concerned for their safety because other rescue trucks that were also under recall were still on the road.

Fire station proposed for Starwood area

A proposal for a new fire substation to serve the exclusive Starwood neighborhood and the McLain Flats corridor will go before the Pitkin County Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday. The Aspen Fire Protection District and the Starwood Metropolitan District are jointly submitting the proposal, which is backed by a $3.1 million bond measure the homeowners association passed in the November election.

The two-story, 4,300-square-foot building also would include two two-bedroom apartments for firefighters and their families, said Aspen Fire Chief Rick Balentine.

A new, centralized headquarters was a result of a multiyear planning process that calls for replacing existing fire stations with others better positioned to match how the town has grown geographically. The goal is to cut response times to fire and rescue calls, said Fire Chief Mick Humer.

A man, who identified himself as a AAA employee, told Local 10 News reporter Michael Seiden that he was towing a vehicle down State Road 7 and saw the firetruck in the distance through his rear-view mirror.

He said he merged into the right lane to allow the firetruck to pass, but his vehicle was struck from behind by the firetruck.
