New Naches fire station bond brings hope to its volunteer firefighters

Next month, Yakima County voters will decide to pass or reject 10 propositions in a special election. 9 of those propositions are levies for local school districts. The last one is a bond, and its fate will affect anyone who uses Highway 12. Naches is a small town with barely 800 people. Right in the heart of it is Yakima County Fire Protection District #3, in a building that was never meant to be a fire station.

Change Order Saves Catoosa County (GA) $36,000 on Fire Apparatus Purchase

During the Jan. 2 Board of Commissioners' meeting, Fire Chief Randy Camp presented the change order request for the contract with Rosenbauer America LLC regarding the five pumper trucks. "We're requesting to accept the change orders from Rosenbauer for different body and chassis adjustments to the five pumper tankers we currently have on order," Camp said. "The change order results in a savings of $36,590. The way this came about is some things we had specified in our bid process were basically name brand items like the ladders on the back that we were able to change."

Fayetteville (GA) to Build New Fire Station

For fire station construction, which was approved in the FY2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax project budget, the site will require $450,000 worth of fill dirt for site preparation. When the Board of Commissioners approved the demolition at its Jan. 11 meeting, it asked that options for sewer system connection be explored, since the existing septic system is not usable.

Phoenix (AZ) Increasingly Taps Taxis for 911 Callers to Hospital

The number of taxi rides is growing — overwhelmingly so for people in poor neighborhoods — as fire officials wrestle with more calls and limited resources.  

The little-known operation, known as the taxi-voucher program, is billed as a way to tend to medical transports not deemed emergencies. Taxi vouchers are paid for by the city and cost a fraction of an ambulance ride.

Elmira (NY) Fire Department Getting New River Rescue Boat

The boat holds eight people, and the propless motor will allow for safe travel in shallow water over a rocky bottom.  

The boat and motor will be owned, maintained and stored by the fire department, and will replace a 25-year-old solid hull boat and prop motor. The old boat will be repaired and used as a backup, if needed, according to Fire Chief Joe Martino.
