One person was found dead after a two-alarm house fire Tuesday in Mount Vernon, emergency officials said. Crews responded to the scene, in the 1500 block of East Spruce Street, at about 3:40 a.m. after receiving reports of a home fully ablaze there, said Mount Vernon Fire Chief Bryan Brice. A second alarm was sounded and additional firefighters arrived on scene.

A rescue operation is underway after a Jeep Cherokee crashed through a barrier and plunged into the water at the Washington State Ferries terminal at Anacortes, officials said. At least one person was inside the vehicle. The emergency has forced the ferry system to suspend service between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands for several hours.

A group who’s dedicated their lives to helping others, the Puyallup Extrication Team, needs the public’s help to continue their training program. Since 2000, the team has been training first responders in the art of extrication. This often includes training on how to use the ‘Jaws of Life’ to rescue people trapped as a result of car crashes.
