Spokane’s fleet of firefighting drones will now be used by police investigators surveying the scenes of deadly car crashes. The City Council gave its consent Monday night for crash investigators, who had previously been suspended from fire engine ladders to photograph wrecks, to use the fire department’s three (soon to be four) devices to take the pictures instead.

Rain and cooler temperatures helped firefighters as they continue to battle the Jolly Mountain Fire. Fire officials say the blaze burning about six miles northwest of Cle Elum is about 40 percent contained, scorching an estimated 38,800 acres. Crews continue to patrol for hotspots and strengthen fire lines.

Maple Valley firefighters were called to a house fire in the 21600 block of 220 Avenue Southeast. When firefighters arrived at 11:42 a.m., they found smoke and flames coming from one end of a double-wide mobile home. The resident, who was not home when the fire started, notified the responders that everyone was out of the house, though there were possibly two dogs inside.

Houston firefighter Brian Sumrall, described by friends and co-workers as "an amazing person" on Sunday, was in the midst of doing what set him apart: helping others. He was traveling southbound on FM 770 about two miles from the rural town of Batson in a Kubota tractor when he was hit from the rear by a Chevrolet pickup driven by Joe Patton, 35, of Hull.

A fire chief said he had to take matters into his own hands when a UPS driver was attacked by pit bulls. Orting Valley Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Steve Goodwin said he rammed a gate when someone at the house refused to open it. The rolling chain-link gate in question is back upright now after the Fire Department crashed through it Wednesday.
